Dawson's Diamond — Jubilee or 7 Dawson City, Yukon, the golden int in its year-long diamond Pibilee celebrations. City status as granted on Jan. 9, 102. At the height of the Klondike gold-rush, in 1898, Dawson housed over 40,000 restless adventurers sand now, although its inhabitants number 600, a sense of excitement still lingers. This summer will be a particularly interesting time to be there. Three years after incorparation the“ citizens, dissatisfied’ with mismanagement and high taxes, voted to remove the mayor and council and to return to govern-, ment by Ottawa. But the charter was never rescinded and Dawson is still the most northerly city in the Commonwealth. . It has been a place of quick changes and contrasts. Within the epace ‘of ‘months, history turned a smal] ledge of forest, wedged between a mountain and the Yukon and Klondike rivers which meet beside it, into a teeming. center of prospectors and traders, ready to gamble their lives on rumours of gold. A few years later, the community mellowed into upright Edwardian ‘elegance, where Paris fashions were worn and society was or- dered with strict formality. Entertainment was a priority in Dawson from its beginning. In ‘athe riotuous days of 1899, when ‘Inuggets of gold jangled from necklaces con ‘the bar-room giris 4 and passed-from hand to hand as | normal tender, a colourful character named Arizona Charlie :] Meadows came to town to collect a share of the riches. No miner, Charlie sought his fortune in show biz and built the Pejance Grand theater and dance Decorating it with plush ~ city of the north, is at the half-way _ cut gowns and ostrich-plumed hats, Charlie claimed to own the most lavish theater in the north. He undoubtedly did. . ‘As the fortune-hunters moved on to other gold strikes, or. to ‘spend their wealth elsewhere, the dance hall queens went too and the theater was abandoned. It had to wait another fifty years or so before it came back to life. '. Now, each summer, the Palace ‘Grand is decked out with flags and the velvet curtains rise for 4 ‘family version of ‘the old vaudeville shows, with skits, jugglers, songs and can-can dancers. Down the street, gamblers try. their. luck at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall which has been refurbished in’ honor of Jubilee year. Red tiffany shades hang from a black ceiling, lighting the oval of green baize gaming tables. Dealers flick the cards in response to the players’ signals, then gather them up with smooth professional gestures. . Round the walls, crown and anchor wheels spin. Non-players’ walk around, sit at tables beside the stage or look down from the balcony on the kaleidoscope of ’ movement below. Several times a night, the stage lights up and a _ line of high-kicking girls dance to the accompaniment of a honkytonk piano and 4a comedienne sings and tells stories with the vivacity of Gertie her- self, who:was one of the stars of the gold-rush era. The always heen a time of celebration in Dawson. With her rouged cheecks and prim clothes, - the doll combines a richness and Dawson’s golden history. , Dawson's civic pride certainly exceeds its size and arrangements for its 76th year have kept the population busy for months.
