There are many physically disabled people whose particular needs are not covered by any other agency or government department; and there are many others who cannot meet the cost of rehabilitation services they require. These are the people who, in B.C., are helped by the Kinsmen Rehabilitation Founda- tion's direct and indirect programs. Yes {Indirect Programs Patient Care Department of the KRF, in the 1979-80 fiscal year, pro- vided over 1100 services to children and adults in B.C. Typical of the many services provided were: .® appliances, such as braces, artificial limbs, orthopaedic shoes, lifts, etc.; @ accommodation and transportation ex- penses to medical centres. The department's Equipment Loan Program provides people with such items as Fataps, wheelchairs, elevators, hospital beds, watk- ing aids, etc. ona free permanent loan basis. There is a regular program of follow-up for repair and maintenance of the leaned items. The Disabled Living . Resource meets a long recognized need in providing answers on any subject telated to the lives of physically handicapped people, with the exception of medical matters. , The Centre is an addition to the existing Patient Care and Technical Aids Programs of the Founda- tion, and is the only one of its kind in Canada, Subjects covered range from bathrooms, clothing and general household equipment, to mobility aids, accommodation, employment 2nd feisuze ac- tivities. Featured are displays of sites to daily living for disabled people, including actual equipment. The Foundation pioneered this type of equip- ment in Canada and, since the first unit was installed in 1973, over two hundred have deen placed by the KRF with severely disabl- ed persons in 8.C., more than the total in the rest of the country. This equipment gives them a degree of self-reliance, limited but cherished, to do everyday things. for themselves — things that we all take for granted. Through the print and elecironic media, the publication of the KRF’s quarterly journt, IMAGE, and other Projects, it informs the public, rehabilita- tion professionals, and physically disabled Persons, of the KRF's aims and the services it provides, and of new developments in the field of rehabilitation.
