RS June 2000 Volume 36 Number 6 ALISON TANG A Profile Alison is one of those classic potters, She's self-taught, worked her way through public studios and workshops inte her own studio, and is keenly interested in developing her own style. She has moved away from clectric firings and bugle ber own wood kiln on ber property. Her work is inspired by a Japanese Bizen aesthetic brought together with a West Caast flare, Her pottery 18 generally a toasty-warm brown lined with a soft omnge Shino. On some pieces she has melted deposits of aqua glass, which lend a soft touch to the Wonderfully rustic quality of the clay body she uses. Her teapot bundles are made of a type of grass found inthe woods behind her house; the handles are designed by her husband Chis Gill, a chemist and growing aficionada of clay. Although she has been working with clay for abouteight years, she 1s just beginning to market her work and is exploring new avenues of exposure.
