Using clay as her medium Helen Ormiston Smith explores the concept
of permanence and Vwlaerability. The landscape-like wall pieces fea-
tured in The Gallery of BC Ceramics’ November show are non-
Functional and reflect, through their play with texture and negalive
space, the carly years of (he artist's childhood spent in the Himalayas,
and now her later adult life on the West Cost.

The natural colours of the landscape and sky are captured on these
decorative panets with slips, stains and glares In Helen's words she
finds inspirationin™... the deep blues of the pre-dawn sky and Chear lilac
reflectians on snow, the mch apricots and apples that the sun brings at
dawn, the turquoise of mountain lakes...”
