Summer is bere again and | hope the towr- ists are arriving in droves to buy all the ceramics in the Gallery, T want to meniion sone issues ihe mew board has begun to discuss. Ron Peicht pointed out last nyonth that attendance was lower than projected for the Made of Clay spring sale: conse- quently revenue to the Guild was less, Book sales were also fewer than antici- pated. The Board tn its collective wisdom has opted to be conservative and not con- CORNER CHAIR sider any further spending until substan- tially more of our line of credit is retired, This means we have suspended Gallery renovalions for now, We will be concen: trating on selling books to our tourist cus- tomers this summer Any members who have high summer traffic in their studpos can help this cause by having lots of books on haricl It has been pointed owt tous that we are mot using the Performance Works to our full advantage when we rent it for a week but use it for only the four days of Made of Clay. With this in mind we have decided to hold Lottery for Pottery immediately before the next spring Made of Clay sale and not in November at the Roundhouse where lime and 4 lack of a truly sauiteble space are against us. Rachelle Chinnery will be coordinating this event which we still hope to de in conjunction with the Dubrulle Cooking School, Please be think- ing of making a pottery donation for the henefitof the Guild when you are working over the next few months. Meanwhile prepanctions are full steam ahead for Made of Clay at Christmas. We are organizing our conumittees for the next year ated should have them com- pleted after our June meeting, We will publish a list of committees and who is on them in the September issue, Anyone is welcome wha may have some ure to comribute or a special interest in one of our initiatives, particularly workshops, exhibitions and fundraising. Another topic of discarssion is our website, As you may be aware our site is currently par of Margaret Hsu's and is managed by her. We are wondering whether it would not be more sensible and convenient to have aur own. As these things cost a fair amount i is net an ewsy decision. If any- one has thoughts on the relative value of websites and what real value we could derive from having one, we would love to hear from you. Alon Vallis President MADE OF CLAY CHRISTMAS EXHIBITION AND SALE The Board has approved a number of changes to our pending Christmas event. including the above heading. The most exciting feature is that we will be hosting a preview exhibition and sales event on Thursday, November 18, from 6200-900 PM at the Roundhouse, This provides an expanded opportunity for ex- hibitors. Admission will be free to any one (orcouple) with an invitation. Weestimate that about 2,500 invitations were distrib- wed for our May show. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be available. The preview sales event is one of anumber 4 NOVEMBER 18-21 of changes incorporated in our Made of (Clay program resulting from the responses by exhibitors to our questionnaire at the conclusion of the May show. [ wall not discuss at this time those changes which apply only to the Granville Island spring show as it may tend to confuse; suffichent to say, however, that we will continue to hold our May show at that venue because of overwhelming support. Our Christmas event will be promoted with approximately the same budget as eurspring show, This includes advertising in three newspapers and two arts maga- zines and the distribution of 200 posters, We have established a small committee to ensure that we capitalize on all free promo Opportunities in craft publications, bulle- ins, billboards, etc. To this end, we are now working on the design of our invita- tion cards and posters; the cards will be larger, 4°x9°, and will feature armap show- Ing aceess to the Roundhouse. We will continue our $2.00 admission fee for the exhibition and sale on November Pica OE OP Belk mt. Li 19-21; the preview eventis free for invited guests. Our promotion will state that chil- dren under 12 will be admitted free. Ex- hibitors were evenly splitin theirresponses lo the questionnaire on this matter, [t is essential that, if we are going to have a budget for promotion, that an admission fee be charged, | personally believe that it is non-issue to any person interested in socing such a broad ceramics presenta- thon. The deadline for registration is Monday, July 12. Included in this tesuc- of the news- letter is an application form included pre- viously with the May tssuc. This event represents a great opportunity to expose artists’ work during a prime lime al a cost well below such events as Circle Craft. Vendors at the May Show cited the satis- faction of camaraderie. For additional in- formation, see page | of May, 1999 news- letter. Ron Feicht Director Pin ee TE
