Top hat takes to the road A LARGE top hat comes to life in a play written by a Cassie Hall grade 4 class for the Odyssey of the Mind competition, The play was good enough to get the youngsters first place in their division at the regional level. That means theyll be heading off to provincial compctition, April 16 in Kamloops. The win came asa big sur- prise to both coach Carla Eide and her seven students. All were new to Odyssey of the “Mind competition and had just hoped to do their best. Odyssey of the Mind is an international organization with an aim toward getting students to work creatively in a team. All the ideas and work must be produced by the students. - Competitions take place at a regional, provincial and international level, Cassie Hall sent two leams to the regional competition on March 7 in Prince Rupert, “We were shacked when we heard we wou,”’ said young Alyssa Carson, who co-directed the top hat play with Tyler Finnie. The category the team competed in is called “‘Creale and Animate.’* Stu- dents create and present a bumowrous —_— performance where an inanimate object comes to Life. Accompany- ing the performance must be an: original poem or song and original music. Before they wrote the play students were torn between using a top hat or a twist tie OFF TO PROVINCIALS — The grade four Odyssey of the Mind team at Cassie Hall is going to the provincial competition in Kamloops next week, The team is Elise Brais, Alyssa Carson, Emily Rusche, Leaha Broome, Stacey Lopushinsky, Tyler Finnie and Brian Lanberg, with coach Carla Eide. vole settled the matter. So the students created the large top hat, leaving room for actor Stacey Lopushinsky to stick her ams through. The hat comes alive as the student actors draw arms, eyes, mouth nose and morc. Finally Stacey gels legs and dances off stage saying, ‘‘]'m going to New York to get me some hunks.”’ That line was made by Alyssa, she points out, In preparation for the Kamloops competition stu- dents are reworked the play, trying to put in more humour. So they changed one character to Daisy Flower —- a hippie news reporter. “It’s been an emotional experience,” says Eide of coaching the team. There were a few tears before the Prince Rupert performance, but she thinks getting that over with helped the team. Trying their besi, then winning first place is what impressed Elise Brais, an- other student actor, the most, Team mate Leaha Broome liked the personalities they created for the play — such as forgetful, clumsy and rocker. In order to get the mini- mum $2,000 needed for the trip students have been soliciting donations from the community. The response has been very good so far, says Bide. kakkk Cassie Hall students aren’t the only ones heading to the provincial competition. Uplands Elementary sent four teams to the regional and the grades 47 camouflage creation team qualified for provincials. And Clarence Michael is also sending two teams to provincials. All arc in grade six. The boy’s team, the one which went to the world competition last year, is going again to the provin- cials. The girls team also qualified last year but didn’t travel.
