OPPOSITION LIBERALS aren’t having any Luck in con-
vincing Skeena NDP MLA Helmut Giesbrecht to fight his
‘government’s plan to use money from Forest Renewal
B.C. (FRBC) for general government spending,

Giesbrecht has responded to the letter from the Terrace
and District Chamber of Commerce, saying FRBC is first
tucking away $400 million as security for future years,

Any surplus over that will be tumed over to the govern-
ment, he said.

“Using FRBC’s surplus is a way of returning revenue
from a taxpayer’s resource and using it to facilitate the
delivery of services by offsetting federal government of-
floading, or reducing the debt or the potential for a
deficlt,”’ he said. ,

“Even though the financial crunch for healthcare, educa-
tion and the airport is precipitated by the federal govern-
ment walking away from their responsibilitics, neither the

municipal councils or the chamber of commerce has ever ‘' |
expressed concern to the federal government, yet they
presume to pass judgment on the provincial government’s

And Giesbrecht said a letter sent to him from the Terrace
and District Chamber of Commerce asking him to fight the
FRBC transfer is part of the campaign of the Liberals and.
their supporters.

“It was highly partisan in nature, reflecting the Liberal

* position,’’ Giesbrecht said of the letter.

“We got $12 million (from FRBC for the Terrace area)
and we'll continue to get more,’’ said Giesbrecht, ‘‘There
was no theft of $400 million, The word theft is entirely in-
appropriate, There was no pressure from the government to
FREC to help out the goverament,” he added,

“This was money FRBC couldn’t reasonably spend. If
this money is to be used to maintain services for my con-
stituents, so be it. I'll continue to defend my constituents,”
the MLA continued.

Giesbrecht said he hasn’t heard from individual con-
stituents opposing FRBC’s decision. He did concede. that
forest companies might have a right to criticize the deci-
sion.

But he noted forestry companies sit on the board of
FRBC and it was the board that voted to hand over the ;
money.

“They in their wisdom decided to help out the govern-
ment to maintain services,’’ said Giesbrecht.
