The test area is bordered by Lazelle Ave., Kenney St, Soucie Ave. and Sparks St. MacLean said service in the test area will be for 60 days starting near the end of June to make sure the sys- tem works properly, Alter that, they'll Jook at marketing the premium In- ternct service under the company’s OSG Interactive Internet provider. How much the service will cost hasn’t been determined, he added. So far only small portions of the company’s cablevi- sion network is capable of sending signals in both directions — which is necessary for cable Internct ac- cess. The company will over time upgrade the network and increase the area Where the service is available. “Its a process of building blocks,’? MacLean ex- plained, ‘Say a given business wanted to take ad- vantage of the speed of the modems. That could open up more access for residential customers in that area.’’ Okanagan Skecna Group, which spent $1 million last year to encircle the city with a fibre optic ring, teamed up early this year with giant provider i*STAR Internet to form OSG Interactive. The campaign is being mounted by the North By Northwest Tourism Association, which is getting support from town councils throughout the northwest. Association vice-president Ken Veldman says the present every other day service leads to 4 sporadic’ tourism market that deters expansion, Association members claim daily summer sailings would pour tourism dollars into the northwest. “They're going at 100 per cent capacity during the summer,’? Fibre link B.C, TEL is accelerating plans to link Ter- race to the rest of B,C. by 570 kilometres of fibre optic cable. The company now says il will complete the $10.8 million project by November. It will allow high-speed Internct access, videoconferencing, and ultimately it will give B.C, Tel the ability to compete in cable TV markets if it gets a licence to do so from the federal government, The Prince George to Fraser Lake section was completed last year. Crews are now working on the section from Smithers to Hazelton. Project manager Don Garry said fibre op- lics technology provides noise-free circuils because glass fibre is immune to elec- tromagnetic interference, It’s also lighter and smaller and has much greater capacity than copper. Although the fibre optic trunk line will by November open up this arca 10 new services, B.C. Tel hasn’t decided how to connect each home. Upgrading every home to fibre would be prohibitively expensive, the company says. They may use data-compression technology to use the existing copper wires to the homes, or else a wireless system. No decision has been made by the federal government on whether to grant B.C. Tel’s request for a licence to compete in provid- ing cable TV service, ' The company’s original application for a broadcast licence was rejected by the CRTC on the grounds B.C. Tel is 51 per cent American-owned. B.C. Tel appealed the decision to federal cabinet. Federal Industry minister John Manley said last week the government is drafting repulations that will govern how cable TV and telephone companies will be permitted to allowed compete with each other.
