Liberal candidate gets boost TERRACE — Doreen Lawson, executive direc- tor of the B.C. Liberal Party, toured the Skeena riding recently in support of candidate and Terrace resident Bill Hayes. Dur- ing her stop in Terrace Lawson discussed several aspects of Liberal policy, including tax relief for small businesses and an assistance program for entrepreneurs. Lawson, in contrast to other party leaders, is travelling through the region by automobile, and she said the trip, in addition to other journeys in previous years, has reminded her of the size of this area and the transportation problems and icgistics of living here. The Terrace stop comes after visits to Williams Lake, Prince George, Fort St. John and other northern centers. Hayes is conducting a low-key campaign com- pared to other can- didates in the riding, and he said he is relying primarily on personal contact rather than cost- ly media advertising. He and Lawson have been through much of the riding, knocking on doors and talking to voters in an effort to get the Liberal message across before Oct. 22. Lawson said that on a provincial basis support for the Liberals is higher than expected, and she cited a BCTV poll taken two weeks after the elec- tion call indicating that Liberal support had gone from six to 12 percent of decided voters in that period. With regard to the election outcome, Lawson believes it will depend on public faith in Bill Vander Zalm. ‘Will voters take Bill Vander Zalm at face value?
