Nasty
train
ends run

What may be the grimiest,
amelliest and slowest
passenger train in Canada
has gone out of business.

It wasn't really a
Passenger train at all, but a
single day caach tagged onto
the back of the Dominion
Atlantic Railway’s daily
freight for the 10-kllometre
run between Truro and
Windsor, N.S. On most days
it had no pagsengers at all,
only a lonesome conductor,

Four years ago, my wife

- and [ boarded the ancient

car at Truro to try out one of -
Canada’s moat unusual
trains,

The train winded through
some of Nova Scotla’s
prettiest wild countryside,
especially where It crossed
the mile-wide tidal reaches
of the Shubenacadie River.

Unfortunately, the win-
dows were so dirty we
couldn't see much. |

The car dated back to the
early 180s and would have
been a quaint step Into the
past were it not for the dirt.

Up front, a charcoal-fired
floor-to-ceiling burner filled
the car with heat — and with
an acrid, choking smell like
halfburnt coal,
