a I THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY Communist parties around world greet Labor - Progressive party MESsaces are being received from all parts of the world congratulating the Labor-Pro- gressive party on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Canadian party of Communists. From Moscow the central committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union cables: RECS . , “The central committee of the CPSU greets and congratu- lates the LPP of Canada on its 30th anniversary. We wish the LPP success in the struggle for the vital interests of the working people of Canada, for lasting peace and democracy.” Premier Maatyaas Rakosi, leader of the Hungarian Work- ing People’s party, telegraphs: “In the name of the Hungar- ian Working People’s party we send warm fraternal greetings to the LPP of Canada and its tested leader, comrade Tim Buck, on the occasion of the party’s 30th anniversary. We wish you much succéss in the struggle for the rights of the Canadian working people and. the defense of peace.” Headline defined B.M., Vancouver, B.C.: Your headline writer seems to have gone somewhat overboard when he ‘headed an article I wrote in the February 1 issue of the Pacific Tribune: “I Came To Canada with 700 Nazi DP’s.” In this article I described my unpleasant experience crossing the Atlantic in company with 700 Canada-bound DP’s. Most of the 700 DP’s were, as I stated, reactionary, ahti-labor individuals. I was shocked by the Nazi and neo-fascist nature of a great many of these DP’s. However, at no point in my article did I refer to them as “700 Nazis.” Indeed, I acknow- ledged that among them there may well ‘have been some pro- gressives, afraid to reveal this fact. Since several persons have drawn my attention to the apparent inconsistency between the article and the headline, I believe it should ‘be pointed out ' that the headline (which was in quotes) was not written by me. Nor do these words ap- pear in the ‘body of the article. Probably the headline was uncomfortably close to the truth. But even if only half of the DP's aboard were ‘‘Nazis” or fascist-minded, the situation is grim enough ito warrant the deepest concern on the part of Canadian labor and our citizens generally. Revealing figures DR. J. BLUMES, Vancouver, B.C.: Just recently, the Mani- toba ®Milk Board rejected re- quest from ‘distributors for an increase in the maximum price -of milk. As a result, the price for home delivery in Winnipeg will remain at 20 cents per quart, and store price will also 1 Dawg Mit it Wute * ing too much milk. Veteran leader William Z. Foster,| for ‘the Communist Party of the U.S.A., in a long letter of solidarity, concludes: “We hail your party for the long and gallant fight it has made under the leadership of the beloved Tim Buck. We know that its achievements in the past will be eclipsed by its work in the future, in the daily struggle of the masses, in the eventual fight of ‘tthe working class and the Canadian people -for national independence and socialism.” : General Secretary Walter -Ul- bricht of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany: “Under the flag of unity ail working people of town and country will come. ‘to see ‘the truth of ‘the LPP’s struggle for peace, national in-. dependence and democracy.” The central committee, Com- munist Party of China, cables from Peking: “Dear comrades: ’ ‘On the occasion of the 30th an- niversary of the founding of your party, the central com-> mittee of the Communist Party of China sends cordial greetings to you and to the Canadian working class. May the LPP of remain at 18 cents per quart. This decisive action on prices which are even those in Vancouver seem to contrast very sharply with the lack of any clear position pro- vided by our own board. When all prices are spiralling, the consumer seems quite jus- tified in demanding that ‘the price of basic necessities, at least, does not get out of hand. In fact there is good reason to feel that not only should re; quests for an increase in the price of milk ‘be rejected, but also that the price could and should be lowered. For example, since the cost of living index is approximate- ly at 190 it would suggest that milk on a 1939 index of 10 cents a quart should be selling for 19 cents instead of 22 cents. After all, milk js not a luxury item! Nor can it be said that people in this area are drink- Tf ‘our Metropolitan Health Board~ is correct. 60 percent of our child- ren are not getting enough milk. — Ba ae : ' There is yet another factor that should be considered. Are local distributors in such. des- perate financial shape that they cannot survive without price in- ‘ereases? Surprisingly the B.C. Milk Board left this question completely unanswered. i The Dominion Bureau of Statistics however ‘has provid- — ed some very revealing data. In 1944 the dairies made a net profit after taxes of $2,889,000. In 1949 the net profit after taxes had risen to $5,342,000, or an increase of 85 percent: In addition the dairies were able to make a capital expenditure | of about $40 million, which ex- | plains the large new dairies . capitalist countries. Your. Derartnent What You Ponte lower than Canada gain further great suc- cesses in leading the Canadian people in the struggle for the defence of world peace and for - social progress.” L. L. Sharkey, general secre- tary, Communist Party of Aus- tralia: ‘The arms race now pro- ceeding in the imperialist coun- tries is impoverishing the masses and ruining their econ- omics. The struggle for peace is thus the defense ‘of the living standards of the people. This is common to the peoples in all We wish you and the Canadian working people victory ‘in the great his- toric task ‘of’ the struggle for peace, democracy and _ social- ism.” Eugenio Gomez, for the Com- munist Party of Uruquay: “We send our warmest greetings on your anniversary. We _ greet your fight for 'the liberation of the Canadian working class against imperialism. In ‘the past you have fought against British imperialism; today you fight valiantly against American im- perialism, which js more brutal and is trying to enslave the elected all over Vancouver re- cently. ’ In view of all this I cannot help ‘but feel that the Milk Board must return to the pub- lic scene again to investigate the possibilities of reducing the price of milk. 3 Biel-Canodian patriot DAVID WITTIG, Calgary: In Calgary recently, Ben Swan- key, leaders of the Alberta sec- tion of the Labor-Progressive party, gave his second and con- cluding talk on the life of Louis Riel. Both talks provoked con- siderable discussion and led to the formation of a committee whose job it is to mainspring | a broad organization which will attempt ‘to restore to 'the people the tradition of a great Can- adian patriot, and the people’s fight for a peaceful and demo- cratic west. Our Canadian ‘history, which ‘is so deliberately belittled and is distinct and» overshadowed, inspiring, the study and con- sciousness of which cannot ‘help ‘but engender feeling and close-— ness with our prairies and peo- — ple. It is to be hoped that more Canadian follow the example our Calgary ‘group has set in- this respect.
