January 6th, 1975 underway which will include covered ditches, tree-planting, etc. to ensure that this Community gets its share of the good life. Alderman Traboulay urged the Provincial Government to take over the School tax burden and appealed to it not to force amalgamation on small Communities like the City. Alderman Traboulay stated that it looks like a good year ahead, and asked all the citizens to keep in touch with the Council. ALDERMEN'S REMARKS: Alderman Laking addressed the meeting and spoke on the philosophy of Recreation which he felt was a first priority in the City. Alderm: Laking pointed out that each year there is more leisure time available and more youth growing up, resulting in the need for additional recreational facilities, and he urged parents to take an active part in working with the youth in the City. Alderman Laking then expressed his appreciation for the privilege of serving as an Alderman over the past seven years and stated he was looking forward to serving in that capacity for a further two years. Alderman Mabbett then addressed the meeting, stating that during the past year he had been Chairman of the Building & Protection Committee and Co-Chairman of the Planning & Zoning Committee. Alderman Mabbett stated he felt that safety was a very important priority item to the citizens of Port Coquitlam, and mentioned that although the City and District of Coquitlam had endeavoured to find a suitable solution in providing fire service for the North-west area, no agreement was reached, and the City has, therefore, gone ahead on its own - ordering a fire truck, selecting a fire hall site, hiring staff - and he advised that construction of the fire hall will be commenced this year as scheduled. Alderman Mabbett also mentioned there has been a serious problem concerning fire safety in schools, but that this is now being resolved. Alderman Mabbett referred to the Ad Hoc Housing Committee he was appointed to by the Mayor last year to investigate low cost housing for people in need and stated that the Committee would be carrying on its work as a priority item for the new year. Alderman Mabbett referred to the Provincial Government's proposed housing development in the Northeast area of the District of Coquitlam bordering the City, and mentioned that two vital aspects will have to be studied, namely, access and storm drainage. Alderman Mabbett thanked all those who had supported him in the past and st- ated he hoped for their continued support in the coming year. Aldermen's Remarks- -Alderman Laking Alderman Mabbett
