The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 9, 2000 - AS CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Leave the farmers’ market just as itis Dear Sir: The Aug, 2 editorial entiled “Parking” says it is perhaps time once again to consider the idea of a new location for the farmers’ market. Can you believe anyone would revisit this topic alter the community spent almost five years telling the city (with: overwhelming suppart) that they don't want the market moved. It works: where it is. And there is no parking problem. There is not another location in this town, of in very many other communities, for that miaitter, thal has such an abundance af parking’ spaces. We have been allowed to use the Evangelical: Free Church parking lot and the medical clinic parking lot and we have the George Little Park parking lot, The market is busy, and people have to be care- ful walking, driving and. parking in this area, There are certain -places where they cannat park, in frorit of the washrooms, for-example, as it blocks ‘the view when trying to pull on to Davis-St. People were not complying with the no parking signs on Davis, because, |-feel, they did. not-see the restriction as being necessary. They drove up to the no parking sign, wondered why not and decided | to take a chance and park there anyways. And many people were fined. IU became, very. difficull to enforce. The city. then had to-take an- other look at the situation and they decided. that’ parallel parking along the side of the Park on Davis would not be a problem. People usually comply with requests (hat are reasonable. The market is a great success and we should be. building on that success. It’s an- avenue for tour- ism, for community fund raising, for developing mall business and supporting established focal bu- sinesses. It’s an expression of our multiculturalism. The market is not likely to grow in numbers of vendors or in physical size as we have. come to | realize that a community ‘our size can only. sup- port a certain number of vendors. To keep our market healthy we have had to re- strict our vendors to the geographical areca. within one hour travelling time from Terrace. We will not be increasing the numbers of spaces at the market. However, the market can keep grawing in other ways. ] see the markel’s potential for becoming a market square, an extension of the park, with multi purposes. If it was paved and partially covered it could be used up to eight months of the years as an ouldoor recreational center. It could even be flooded in ideal weather | con- ditions for an out door rink. In Kansas city, mid- night basketball was introduced in a vacant fot that was lit and equipped for youths to play basketball. The crime rate in that-city was cut by 25 per cent. The square could be used for publie events that neede tu’ be ‘under’ cover on those ‘aceasionnl' rainy! days we get. It could also be used for extra parking. when necessary for activities in the park, etc. aT could be a great show case for public art. There is a kind of magic at the farmers’ market. Let’s be positive and go with something that's working. Lynne Christinasen, Terrace, B.C. Hear us, too Dear Sir: While going through some back issues of The Terrace Standard, Ucame across some quotes. . ° “If they would go directly to the residents and. . get some input from them, it would save a lot of problems for a lot of people.” “We don’l want to see any residents have to go through what we’ye had to go through.” “We sim- ply do not want the facility near our area.” “This is a residential area and we don’t want it becoming an industrial area.” These quotes from the Feb, 20, 1991 issue of The Terrace Standard, are all attributed to Jeanette Anderson, speaking on behalf of ihe Kirkaldy Strect Residents, at a time when BCBC was took- ing for a new location for the minimum 1 security correctional facility. : How is it that Jeanette Anderson is now denying the East Halliwell Neighbourhood the very same rights she demanded and got for her Kirkaldy Street neighbourhood? Anne Barwise, East Halliwell Neighbourhood, Terrace, B.C. Here’s to Mighty Moe Dear Sir: Myself and many others do not think Mighty Moe is an eyesore and a distraction. From reading about Mighty Moe's situation and the poor excuses of the highways ministry and he personal harassment from the RCMP, this made me think of what this can do to this poar harmless tle old man's life. Talk aboul eyesores. What about all the blue ribbons pul up at Easter hanging from every street light and pole in Uiis town, Or maybe the flags out up by the city on the bridges on taxpayers dollars, Some may think this is a distraction. What is all this going to cost us taxpayers for the concrete barriers to be placed and then re- moved, and the days in court when Moc appeals his driver’s licence suspension and the costs of judges, iawyers and the RCMP. I am sure if the RCMP had time to follow. any one of your readers around for long enough, they could find same comprehension problems and have their licence suspended for six months also. I have used Moc’s rest area many times myself to have lunch and-bring my stress level down and just watch (he river run by.
