Water safety needed THE THREE WINNERS of a water safety poster contest are part of a much bigger project. ' The latest statistics from the B.C.-Yukon Royal Life Saving Society of Canada (RLSSC) show an increase in (he number of na- tives drownings. Melodie Johnson, coordinator of a youth program at Kitsum- kalum called Brighter Futures, wants to change this trend. ‘We're trying to make kids. know how they can be safe,"’ said Johnson who organized the poster contest. ‘*If we give the kids the message about water safety, then they can educate other people.’’ Responding to that increase, water safety groups like Red - Cross and RLSSC are beginning — to work more with native groups.”: “Each group in our community is unique, so we have to find dif-. ferent ways fo get our message out to these people,” said Tony Toriglia, manager of the Terrace Aquatic Centre. _ Sponsoring the Brighter Futures postcr contest is one of the ways Toriglia feels Red Cross and RLSSC can promote water safety in the native community. In 1991, drownings of natives accounted for 11.7 per cent of all B.C. drownings. That rate rose to 12.7 per cent in 1992, said B.C.-Yukon RLSSC exccutive director Dale Miller. ‘Lifesaving education needs to be promoted within native com- munity for the numbers to slop increasing,” said Miller.
