— 6 eer < 2nd Issue November, 1967 THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER MacMILLAN BLOEDEL'S PETTINESS WON'T SLOW COMMITTEE DOWN > The Editor: As you of course know, MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. now send all of their employees a chatty little magazine each month, and also in the Alberni Valley they present a regular radio programme. In view of all the propaganda this Com- pany’s employees are now re- ceiving, we thought that this report might interest you, just in case some of our members are in danger of falling under the illusion that MacMillan Bloedel are becoming a pro- gressive company. Last May, the Franklin Riv- er committee noticed that there was an empty room in an old building that now serves as the Post Office. We asked the Company if we could have the use of this room, as meeting in the Camp Chairman’s room was crowd- ed and made it excessively smoky for sleeping in. This, the Company agreed to. Since then, we’ve acquired a type- writer and a filing cabinet from the Local Union, and in short set up a small Sub-Local Office. We’ve found that this made our work easier and more efficient and as we're continually processing griev- ances we need all the aids we can get. It would appear that the Company feels that we’ve become too efficient. On Tuesday, October 24, the Company called the Com- mittee in and told them that we would have to vacate our Sub-Local office by the end of the following week. When asked why, they said that some of the old buildings were going to be torn down but that wasn’t the reason. The reason was “they didn’t feel that it was right for the Committee to have an office in camp.” FOUR LOVELY S. & K. Plywood strikers assist with strikers’ registration and strike relief cheques in board room of Local office in Kelowna. Sorry no names were given. PICKETS at Allan Lake Lumber Company (top) and Boundary Sawmills (bottom). They made it very clear that the only reason was that “‘it just wasn’t right for the Union te have a Sub-Local office on Company property.” It should be pointed out that the nearest point a Sub- Local office could be set up off of Company property would be in the City of Port Alberni, a distance of thirty miles from the camp in which the bulk of our members re- side. We know that other com- panies allow Sub-Local offices in their camps and townsites. We are told that MacMillan Bloedel does not. We can only assume that these com- panies are living in the 20th century and do not take the archaic attitude to unionism that MacMillan Bloedel does. As the Franklin River Com- mittee feel that. they have been doing a good job in trying to prevent the Com- pany from violating the Mas- ter Agreement in too flagrant a manner, and also have not - allowed the Company to for- get previously agreed to safe- ty recommendations, we have VeHTICAL CLEAPANCE CENTRE t6- 2 *' B CURB | Ea Si a NOTICE LEGAL LOADS ONLY WOOO LBS SINGLE AXLE 32000 LBS TANGEM AXLE He SCOTRUCK SPEED (0 MPH THIS IS THE BRIDGE at Midway that officers of Local 1-423 charge weight restrictions are being violated by log- ging trucks going through IWA picket lines while the RCMP and Department of Highways turn a blind eye. the nasty suspicion that they have taken this action in the hope that it will slow us down. While this action by the Com- pany is extremely petty, it is by no means surprising. It’s merely an example of the us- ual fossilized approach this Company takes towards in- dustrial relations. Finally, we’d like to say that while losing our office makes it more awkward for us, there is no danger of the ~ Committee slowing down. However, we're afraid that there is little chance of a har- monious relationship being es- tablished between the Frank- lin River management and the Committee in the forsee- able future. —FRANKLIN RIVER CAMP.
