Now is the time to go forward on every front! Communique of unity In December, John Gollan and Jack Woddis, general secretary and head of the International Department of the Communist Party of Great Britain respectively, met with representatives of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party. Following are excerpts from a joint statement issued as a result of the discussions. ae defeat of Portuguese fascism by the combined efforts of the national liber- ation movements in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau and the actions of the democratic movement in Portgual have opened the way to the full liberation of the former Portuguese colonies from imperialist exploitation and thereby created a new situation in southern Africa. The white minority rulers of southern Africa, faced with new pressures from the African people in their territories and from the independent African states supported by world progressive opinion, are being compelled to maneuver in an endeavor to find a new basis for the continuation of white control and imperialist exploitation. ‘ : What Vorster and his-backers hope to achieve in South Africa are some mar- ginal changes in minor matters while retaining the substance of apartheid and dis- crimination, continuing the system of cheap African labor, and denying democrat- ic rights to the majority. It is intended to combine minor concessions on fringe as- pects of apartheid with increased emphasis on the system of Bantustans, with the fraudulent purpose of presenting these administrative dependencies as the fulfill- ment of independence for the African people. It is important for all supporters of the African peoples’ struggle in southern Africa to understand that the struggle is not one for civil rights, but for national liberation and political power, for the ending of a systerh based on minority rule, repression and discrimination, and for the introduction of a jenuinely demoeratic power based on majority rule, one man, one vote. The working people of Britain and of South Africa have a common enemy and a common cause. The joint actions of the people of Britain and the oppressed people of South Africa to end repression and apartheid in South Africa is of direct benefit to the British people themselves, who, to solve their present crisis, need to challenge the same big monopolies which exploit South Africa, and which invest their capital there to the detriment of Britain’s own economy. We appeal to all labor and progressive organizations and people in Britain to press the Labor government to carry out the following measures: — End all forms of military cooperation with the South African government. — Ban all exports of capital to South Africa. — Cease all trade with South Africa. — Support all UN decisions to introduce sanctions against South Africa and to expel South Africa from UN membership. .— Call for the release of Nelson Mandela; Ahmed Kathrada, Walter Sisulu, Bram Fischer, John Hosey and all other political prisoners. e Walter Sisulu — Bram Fischer Ahmed Kathrada | Nelson Mandela PACIFIC TRIBUNE—FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 1975—Page 9
