Goodyear Tire and Rubber in

The most significant union de-
mand is for a_ cost-of-living
clause of one cent forevery 3%
increase in the cost of living,
to be calculated quarterly with-
out ceiling. The demand for a
cost-of-living clause is some-
thing that the rubber workers in
the U.S. have failed to achieve,
but Canadian union officials in-
sist that without it, the com-
pany can forget about another
three-year contract and prepare
for bargaining every 12 months.

Drop in Employment

Another union demand is for
a “25 and out” formula for pen-
sions. Early in the negotiating
there was speculation that the
“25-and-out” formula was mere-
ly window dressing and would
be bargained away. But to date,
the union has shown no indica-
tion of dropping it. A rubber
worker told this paper in a tele-
phone interview, “The earlier
pension plan is very important
to the worker in the plant be-
cause of the rapid loss of em-
ployment in the industry.” The
drop in employment, according
to a brief submitted by the
United Rubber Workers to the
federal government is primarily
due to a reduction in the import

_duty on foreign tires.

In the past -six years, tire im-
ports into Canada have grown
eight-fold. And the acceleration
in imports has been compounded
by the introduction of radial
tires that have a longer life span.
The union fears that the two
processes will eyentually spell

Calling on the electorate to
“Vote Communist everywhere
you can.” The Party statement
said that the bigger the Com-
munist vote the bigger the guar-
antee that-a Labour govern-
ment would carry out the poli-
cies: the movement demands.

“Britain needs real _ social
change. Capitalist, class-divided
society, with its handful of ex-
ploiters and the majority of the
exploited, has made a farce of
democracy, with the real power
of decision in economic, social
and political affairs in the hands
of faceless, un-elected men of
big business.-These are the forc-
es now openly threatening. de-
mocracy.

“For years this has been the
issue facing Britain. Toryism
represents all that is old, stale
and historically outmoded; Lib-
eral policies are basically Tory.

“This is an historic election.
Use your democratic power,’
the. CP statement told British
electors. “Clear the Tory wreck-

and open the way to Socialism.

Boycott aimed at
largest stores

TORONTO — Forty Dominion

Stores were picketed by sup-
porters of the United Farm
Workers on Feb. 9 in an effort
to persuade the stores from
selling scab produce.

The farm workers say that
