THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM Memorandum November 16, 1993 To: Francis K.K. Cheung, EIT, Project Engineer From: Janna Taylor, Parks & Recreation Director Subject: New City Fill Site - Riverwood Lagoon The Parks & Recreation Committee discussed the request from the Public Works Committee to use the sewage lagoon as a fill site. For many reasons the Committee is strongly opposed to this option. The major reason is that the Parks & Recreation Committee has not had an opportunity to review what use this lagoon will have as a park. Other concerns include that there are many nesting birds on the site and putting in fill will disturb their natural habitat. The assumption that this site will be raised to be used for future development is not necessarily valid. The lagoon may be left as is. However, until a concept plan has been done, we have no idea what will happen. Once a plan has been completed there may be an opportunity for an area to be set aside for fill. Aiso this area must be discussed with Council as a whole before any decision can be made. The Parks & Recreation Committee is suggesting that you may wish to investigate the future extension of the cemetery as a possible fill site. Presently the current burial spaces in the cemetery will last approximately another two years. Therefore in the near future the Parks & Recreation Department will be investigating expansion and a sizable amount of fill will be required. I am prepared to discuss this alternative with you so that the Public Works Committee has another option. <7 Tx aye 7 P C JT/
