3497 Hastings Street, Port Coquitiam, B.C., V3B 4N2 March 9, 1992. The City Council, City of Port Coquitlam, 2580 Shaughnessy St., Port Coquitlam, B.C. Dear Lady & Gentlemen: Regrettably, prior community service commitments prevent us from attending your meeting tonight, but both of us wish to express our strong opposition to your recent decision to remove the Kitchener Street traffic island. The installation of this island has caused a dramatic reduction of traffic on Hastings Street, particularly during the evening rush hour. We have not experienced traffic backed up past our driveway waiting for the light at Lougheed Highway. This was commonplace before the island was installed. We plead with you to delay removal of this island, at least until the other measures (two left turn lanes onto Lougheed from southbound Westwood and dedicated left turn onto Hastings from eastbound Lougheed) have been installed and have had a chance to be assessed. At that point, if traffic on Clayton/Touhey/Murchie is still a problem, we would suggest blocking this route with barriers such as are used in the West End of Vancouver, which are traversable by emergency vehicles. Yours sincerely, "4
