We believe, as do. our business associates, that the Annacis Mill can once again be a major industrial operation, providing good jobs, an expanded tax base and an export platform for a quality ‘Made in B.C.’ product. We are asking you the Delegates to the UBCM Convention to help us re-open the Annacis Island tubing mill by supporting the following Emergsncy Resolution. Thank you. ‘Canadian Association of Industrial, Mechanical and Allied Workers’ ‘Office and Technical Ernployees Union’ ro EMERGENCY RESOLUTION TO THE UBCM - UNION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA MUNICIPALITIES CONVENTION SEPTEMBER 17-20, 1991, VICTORIA, B.C. Whereas a study by the Provincial Government and a Union study have independently proven that Wolverine has been manufacturing, sub-standard thin wail tubing that fails to meet the standards required by the Provincial Plumbing Code, while purporting that the tubing did meet those standards and which has and continues to result in premature failures of copper tubing systems and significant repair costs for building owners, and Whereas Canadian Association of Industrial, Mechanical and Allied Workers, , the Office and Technical Employees’ Union, and supervisory staff at the Annacis island Tubing Mill are working with the Federal and Provincial Gavermments and experienced B.C. businessmen to re-open the mill and produce a cost effective, quality product for domestic and export markets, but Wolverine has stated it does not want competition, and Whereas the Annacis Island tubing mill, which had operated successfully since 1958, was B.C.’s largest consumer of copper, both virgin and re-cycled, adding value to a major B.C. resource, and Therefore be it resolved that the Union of British Columbia Municipalities calls upon the Provincial and Federal Governments to exercise their respective powers io Secure divestiture of the Annacis island Tube Mill, at fair market vaiue, to parties interested in operating the Annacis island mill to reintroduce competition to the copper and copper alloy tube manufacturing industry in Canada and to produce a cost effective, quality product for domestic and export markets.
