JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST POVERTY!!! RESCLUTION ON MINIMUM WAGE WHEREAS a single person can work full time at the B. C. minimum wage of $5 an hour and still be $2000 to $3000 a year below the poverty line; and WHEREAS in 1975 a single berson working at minimum wage earned 122% of the poverty line; and WHEREAS today a single person would have to earn $7.50 an hour to reach 122% of the Poverty line; and WHEREAS low wages cause Poverty and poverty causes sickness, higher infant and adult mortality rates; and | WHEREAS higher wages will increase purchasing power and enable businesses to have customers that Can spend more money; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT (this group, union, church, municipality) endorse the principle of increasing minimum wage to $7.50 an hour, ane that we urge the Premier, and Prime Minister to increase the minimun wage to $7.50 an hour. RESOLUTION ON WELFARE RATES WHEREAS over 200,000 B. C. citizens depend on welfare in B. C.; and | WHEREAS about 75,000 of these people are children; and ! WHEREAS over 30,000 are Single parents; and WHEREAS welfare rates are about half the poverty line (from 47 to 64%); and WHEREAS the average poor family in B. Cc. is $4000 a year below the poverty line; and WHEREAS poor people suffer from more Sickness and earlier deaths than other people, and poor babies have twice the infant mortality rate as other babies in Canada; and WHEREAS increasing welfare rates would help businesses in low income communities; and WHEREAS money for reducing poverty could come from the federal government, higher taxes on wealthy people and corporations, and savings in health care, education, and justice system programs: THEREFORE BE'IT RESOLVED THAT (your group, union, church, municipality) end@orse the principle of | ITEM | PAGE 35 raising welfare rates to the poverty line, and that we urge the Premier to do this.
