-~31- 4.5 Service Chances for September: 1990 4.5.1 Nartheast Sector Service Changes Setting The Northeast Sector transit area is situated in the northeastern part of the Vancouver region, and consists of the District of Coquitlam, the City of Port. Coquitlam, the City of Port Moody, the Village of Belcarra and the Ioco and Anmore unincorporated areas. The Northeast Sector can best be described as a developing suburban area. The 1989 population of this area is este imated at 125,100, which is projected to grow to 128,200 in 1990, an increase of 2.5 percent. Public transit, first introduced here in 1973, has played an increasingly important role for both work and non-work related trips. While the transit system has undergone a number of changes in recent years, including service area expansion and bus-SkyTrain integration, a comprehensive review of the system has not taken place since its inception in 1973. Changes proposed for 1990/S1 constitute the first phase of the Northeast Sector Transit Area Plan. ‘The second and third phases of the Area Plan will be implemented in the 1991/92 and 1992/93 fiscal years. 1990/91 Stratecies for the Northeast Sectar Tnere are a number of issues facing transit in the Northeast Sector in 1990/91. These include the need to provide an off-street transit exchange in the Coquitlam Town Certre area, the need to provide service to new development. areas outside of transit service coverage, the need to upgrade service in areas currently served by transit, increasing peak period transit demand on the Barnet-Hastings, Lougheed and SkyTrain corridors and the need for improved inter-mmicipal linkages. In order to address these issues as well as meet the objectives for service coverage and corridor ridership targets, the following enhancements are proposed for implementation in September 1990: Introduction of an off-street transit exchange at the Coquitlam Centre park and ride lot. Introduction of a new service in the Jchnsen Heights residential area. Introduction of a mid-day service in the Noons Creek - Westwood Plateau residential areas. Extension of the peak hour #169 route from the Lougheed park and ride lot to Port Coquitlam Centre, via Mayfair Industrial Park, Mary Hill By-pass, Mary Hill Road, Citadel Drive, and Pitt River Road. Rerouting of a limited number of trips on the #152 service via Chilko Drive and Riverview Crescent (River Hts). Increased peak period service on the Barnet-Hastings and Lougheed corridors to meet ridership targets. 0
