THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM MEMORANDUM “ B.R. Kirk, bee 11988, ogg City Administrator Public Works Committee SUBJECT: Request to Relocate Guardrails -— 2183 Western Drive Recommendation: i. That the request to relocate the protective guardrails at the north end of Weatern Drive east of Mary Hill Road be approved. 2, That the estimated cost of $13,000 for this work be funded from the 1988 Unallocated Public Works Capital Budget. Background and Comments: The attached letter from Mr. and Mrs. Morley of 2183 Western Drive provides background to this request. ‘The findings of the Engineering Department are as £oliows: 1. The reported traffic accidents at this lecation for the years 1983 through 1987 total 6; with one occuring in 1984, four in 1985, and one in 1987. None of them involved pedestrian fatalities that we are aware of. Notwithstanding these statistics, there may have been accidents occurring at this corner which were unreported during the same period. The location of the existing guardrails behind the sidewalk does not offer any protection for pedestrians on the sidewalk. Two options were jnvestigated to offer more protection for pedestrians. The first involves the placement of no-post quardrails on top of the existing sidewalk and widening the sidewalk. Since this will disturb the boulevard and landscaping the property owners object to this ception. The second option is to place no-post guardrails in front of the existing sidewalk on the read. In order to maintain the width of the travelled portion of the road the widening of the road on the inside of this curve will also be required. Since the cost of both options is approximately the same ($13,000), the Committee and the local residents favour the second option. The Public Works Committee supports the approval of this request as per the recommendations. T.M. Choug, P. City Engineer City Treasurer's Comments: Funds are available to cover the costs stated in the recommendation. MOVE lg $. Maitland, A @ity Treasurer attachments
