Workshop includes pollery making, slide
shows, salt firing and onggi pot throwing.

*partici pation is optional ; other tours avail-
able. Participants have been from Canada,
the United States, Japan, Slovalia, New
Fealand, Thailand, China, Australia, and
Korea, Since we plan to make a catalogue
for the workshop, participants should pro-
vide ample materials including photos of
self, work and personal profile. Please
bring to the workshop three cenumic works.

terials, and admission fees to museums,

reanolater than June 30, 2000. Y ou will be
picked up at the airport (Kimpo) by the
festival organizers and taken to the festival

Don't cozy up to the dragon!

Fred Paget had a serious accident recently,
caused by carbon monoxide from his kiln.

He writes:
Here is a little story that ] wrote while in
the hosprtal probably high on morphine.

NOTICE: Whosoever Will Be Warned

The public is notified that I employ two
dragons that are considered dreadful and
dangerous while feeding, When dormant
they are almost harmless, but when at Full
roar during feeding they are baleful, deadly
and dangerous. Their breath is poison and
theirembeace is death. Tasafely approach,
one must be skilled in the ancient art of
pottery and trarnedf in the management of
dragons.

My two dragons are small as dragons go
and quite young. Kaizen the greater, an
Oregon flat top, is only large enough to
hold two dozen pots stacked into his empty
belly while dormant, and Laisan the lustre
is only two years old and can only hold one
or two pots at a time. Compared to the
mighty Tozan, these are mere weasels of
the dragon kind, but they are of the same
ilk and deadly as are all their kind,

Dragons” breath, mostly air, steam, and
carbon dioxide, can go up to 2000 ppm of
carbon monoxide (CO) and have almost
instant deadly results. Atlesserconcentra-
tions the CO in their breath will make a
human sick and weak. The day after Si
Valentine's Day, Kaizen the greater struck
me down, | made the mistake of trusting
the dragon and cozying up toitin a warm
nook near the door where | watched my
gauges and cones and wrote in my journal.
The insidious breath was strong in that
secluded nook, coming through the cracks
in the brickwork and door, even though
Kaizen is nominally outdoors. She is built
sheltered between three other buildings. [1
appears as a possibility— although | have
no memory of whal really happened—
that as | walked away rapidly on some
errand, Kaizen’ s breath struck me downas
[ approached the stair so that I fell on my
face, breaking my jaw, now wired shut,

and striking a great blow to the left side of
my face and eye. Luckily | was justin front
of & glass door where my wile sat observ
ing the fall, and she called 911 immedi-
ately. Our local dragon slayers responded
al once and carned me to the hospital.
They came back and dealt wilh Kaizen,
turning off her gas, She was gloriously
going toward cone 14. Something every
one should do is to post a sign near the kiln
telling the firemen how to safely shut the
dragon down. When you are unavailable,
ho ane may know for sure what to do,

Ten days later and many $$$5335 later,
luckily paid 80% by the HMO, | am out of
the hospital certified sound of heart and
brain but sadly lacking stereo vision which
is especially sad because in other worlds [
am known for my stereo propected orchid
shows in 3D, | am home now and | jotn the
other one-eyed potters on the list although
my work ts of amuch lesser nature. For the
ClayArt room | shall bring a porcelain cup
that I was firing in Kaizen when the acci-
dent occurred. It is made of plastic vitnox!
grolleg/custer in Hank Morrow's formula
for a virtual Petuntse porcelain, glazed in
celadon and Mel's orange. It was the only
thing that came out really well in Kaizen
after her runaway feast. The copper reds
were all over fired and glaze ran off some
Of the pots to make a ring of jewels around
the base. For my crystalline glaze pots
dragon breath would be fatal so] employ
asmall electric weasel, computer trained,
whose name is Itachi to do their firing. To
all the dozens of Clayarters who have sent
me messages of good will, a salute and
thanks and don’ tforget we be (hear masters
but beware of their ticks.
