Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wecinescley, asl 11, 2001 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Ba Didn’t intend public attack on mining rep Dear Sir: I would like to correct @ misstatement in your paper’s report of a discus- sion I had on March 22 with Mr. Gary Livingstone, president of the Mining Association of BC. It is true that I told Mr. Livingstone the MABC was very ineffective in re- presenting the mining in- dustry in the land-use planning groups. This was particularly the case in the Kalum LRMP, where MABC sim- ply was absent and did nat Accident Dear Sir: My young daughter was struck by a passing vehicle recently. She was waiting for a school bus. The driver of the vehi- cle that strack her was not considering that she, being a child, might run out into the road to catch our dog — which I believe may have happened. The driver didn’t con- sider how long it would take to stop his vehicle. My child was hit and thrown several feet through the air. All the while the driver was still bringing his vehicle to a halt. I write this while count- ing my blessings. My daughter is not without cb- vious injuries, but is tech- nically “fine”, but very 2001 Corolla participate at all. However, I did not ac- cuse Mr. Livingstone of this abandonment and I did lot imply that he was per- sonally respansible far it. I don’t even know if he was involved in the MABC during the time in question (1990-1998), Mr. Livingstone came all the way fram Wancou- ver to address the Terrace Chamber of Commerce, As a non-meniber, | felt it was a privilege that I was al- lowed to attend and hear his speech and to later have an exchange of views with him. I did not participate in the public questions be- cause [ wanted to make my point privately without causing a stir. Thanks to Mr. Nagel’s slanting of this conversa- tion, it is now both public and misunderstood, It may become more difficult in future for the public to get this sort of access to guests of the Chamber of Commerce. Harold Smith Terrace B.C, was a lesson to all bruised, The driver is not, [ be- lieve, a person without conscience. The remorse and concern were obvious immediately after the ac- cident, 1 write this as a remin- der to all drivers who would never wish to be on either side of this occur- tence. The doctor who ex- amined my daughter had dealt with a very similar occurrence just three days before. Also in our city. Similarly, he child was able to get up off the pa- vement immediately after being struck and go home very bruised. _ Defensive driving in- yalves not anly slowing down for children, for pe- CE Plus destrians, for bicycle oper- ators, and for animals. It also involves consid- ering the unimaginable. The child that runs after the pet or the ball. The pe- destrian that stumbles. The bicycler whose shoclace gets caught in the chain. All very likely occur- Tences, How much more of an impact does an average vehicle impart for every 10 kmh it is traveling? I’m sure the police know. I’m sure the ambulance atten- dants knaw. I now know. This scene, involving my own child, will replay in my mind for as long as 1 live. | witnessed it. 1 was 60 feet away. W. Dudek Terrace B.C. Afeserg bigee ate dee Dr. R.D.
