A12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 28, 2001 Eye surgeon heads south TERRACE IS losing an- other specialist. This time it's ophthalmo- logist Dr. Steven Shaver who is headed off to the Comox Valley on Yancou- ver Island in mid-April. He’ll be joining two other ophthalmologists, one of whom is set to retire in a couple of years. Shaver is so far reluctant to talk about why he is leaving. But he did say he and his family have enjoyed them- selves in Terrace after mov- ing here from Ottawa early last summer. Shaver came to replace Dr. Tom Nagy who took a year’s leave to work in Ed- monton. He’s due back in mid-April. There had been hope that Shaver would join Nagy, the region’s only ophthalmologist, to broaden coverage of the specialty. But Shaver discovered, upon arrival, that Mills Mem- orial Hospital wanted to curtail ophthalmological surgi- cal time because of budget problems. That put Shaver's practice at risk and propelled him to the forefront of the debate over medical services here and throughout the northwest. Alt the time, Mills Memorial officials said they nee- ded to curtail surgical time in order to stretch out its budget for ophthalmological procedures which would otherwise have sun cut last December. Mills Memorial did retreat from that position and re- ceived additional budget monies to sustain ophthalmolo- gical services past December. Shaver also said other specialists at the hospital were reluctant to extend operating room time tc others be- cause their own was so limited already because of bud- get problems. “We've liked living in Terrace,” said Shaver. “When we left Ottawa last year our goal was to live in a smaller community.” The Comox Valley continues along that vein because it is also a smaller area when it comes te population and, like here, is under serviced when it comes to oph- thalmology, he said, Slight increase for student jobs THERE’S BEEN a slight increase in the amount of money available from the provincial government this summer to hire students, The amount is $40 than. last year and dents; says Sandra” Bil Steve Shaver “The subsidy begins May 1 to Aug. 31,” said Bullock, Up to $4 an hour is available for students who are also being encouraged to mention the program when, they are out looking for work. “It’s a way for them to markel themselves,” Bullock said. Last year the Student Summer Works program cre- ated 236 jabs in the northwest from the Yukon border in the north to Kitimat and from the Queen Charlotte Is- lands to Housten. : Students must be B.C. residents and be at least 15 years old, have attended high school or a post-secondary institution within the last year and must be returning to school. The jobs must be for a minimum 20 hours a week and be for at least 150 hours from May te August.
