A16- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 6, 2000 From front Fate of some areas unknown In the end they man- aged to limit new protec- ‘ted areas under the plan to less than 0.3 per cent of the Kalum jand base. Mulvey said earlier pro- vincial government deci- sions to add large new parks limited how much more park land the table could add. The 1995 preservation of the Kitlope plus the creation of the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park pushed the amount of pro- tected land in the region to near 16 per cent. And Mulvey said the subsequent upgrade of the Gitnadoix from a recrea- tion area — which still al- lowed prospecting — to a fully protected provincial park — pushed the total to mere than 18 per cent. He noted that’s already well above the province’s goal of protecting an aver- age 12 per cent of the B.C. land base. “T wanted to be flexible but I was constrained as to how far I could go,” Mul- vey said. “ft made it more difficult to create other THE 'GILTOYEES watershed along “the Douglas Channel, southwest of Kitimat, is one of two areas members of the land and resource plan project couldn't agree upon in terms of —_ The provincial cabinet will now decide. parks in the Terrace area.’ Mulvey said vrotecied areas proposed but not agreed to in the plan could have pushed the region’s total to as much as 23 per cent protected. “They were looking at vast amounts of areas for protection,” he said. “I took a strong stand at that point.” That, he said, would have been a significant loss of land and opportun- ily for future mineral pro- specting and oil and gas exploration. The Miligit, in particu- lar, he said is an area of extreme importance to prospectors. “It's smack dab in the middle of one of the most highly mineralized areas in the region,” Mulvey said. Grizzlies key part of land plan IF MINERS and loggers have made major concessions to conclude a land-use plan, so have environmentalists and biologists. Bear biologists like Tony Hamilton whittled away at early proposals to find ways to ease the effects of rules to protect grizzly bears on the forest industry. The end resuit, he said, isn’t perfect but goes a long way to protect critical grizzly habitat and the bears’ long term supply of forage. “We didn’t achieve everything we wanted to achieve but we went through the process and came out with a supportable consensus,” Hamilton said. A key part of the plan is the development of the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Management Area, he added, In an important concession by B.C. Wildlife Federa- tion members, the area creates a 400,000-hectare zone northwest of Kalum Lake where grizzly bear hunting will be completely banned. In all, Hamilton suggests the package in total should halt a suspected slide in grizzly bear populations in the region and eventually rebuild stocks to some degree. COMING SOON!! Best estimates now peg the number of grizzlies in the area at 650 — plus or minus 200, “Eventually we could achieve between 800 and 1,000 bears,” Hamilton said, That's a little less than the long-range population fig- ure he’d pushed for earlier. Plans to restore damaged habitat in the region will also help rebuild other wildlife stocks, said environment ministry habitat biologist Len Vanderstar. Environmentalists also gave ground on key areas such as a decades-long relaxation of biodiversity rules called for in the plan. The rules would help maintain as wide a diversity of different species in the region as possible. But conservationist Renee Mikaloff said the conces- sion was necessary because taking a hard line would have forced sawmills ta close in the area. “The implementation of the biodiversity guidelines would have a huge effect on the annual allowable cut,” she said, “It would interrupt the flow of timber to the milis,” od : [ed a ee oe ee ee. ee ee FALE BOXED” LONIAL TBELGIAN SEASHELL 1 i CHRISTMAS eas iCOO KIES 1CHOCOLATES I IWITH THIS yA THIS 2 l WITH THIS 2 i i COUPON yA ' COUPON COUPON l Re, SFT aa OFF Ra SLIPS ato Re, SIPAO ae I | Sroiceir ee see h T MAXELL BLANK ~ *MAXELL ALKALIN ETADIES TEAM III \ VIDEO TAPE T-120 saa ISOCKS Q | WITH THIS WITH THIS 'WITH THIS l 'COUPON 50: ' COUPON 00:: ‘COUPON 99: ES ee ee XTRA on of (DUNLOP SOCKS re Rs Sic Hari FACIAL i i Men s (6 pair) & Boys’ (5 pair) I TAUNDRY, DETERGENT 1TISSU ES l 8 loads a a 's i WITH 99 33; WITH quis 2, WITH THIS 5 THs 1 SOUPON \ I pirat aie Ie a J : Se a a] | IFIESTA BATHROOM I TISSUE 14 Ralls i , WITH THIS TH Ts (WITH THIS | COUPON ' , COUPON Bo 5139 por coupon, Limit ono tr hunen, Limit ono W oa 37.59 coupon, Limit ons | ese 68 Simei i oil aS t ee Oe = Ye oe oe he ed dj rPOT “OF GOLD i cCORMICS “RORES * MAXWELL HOUSE , 1 CHOCOLATES p CURISTMAS CANDY 1COFFEE I WITH THIS l WITH THIS Li rs 1 ' COUPON 99) | COUPON wer Is 99, I Reg. $5.99-55.99 Reg $1.99 | Rog, §7.49-$7.99 | Limit 2 per coupon, Limil one Lind 2 per caupart.
