10 Terrace Review: — Wednesday, October 2, 1991 Centennial Christian School marks 25th anniversary Celebration next week Contributed by Frank Voogd Centennial Christian School, located in‘the heart of Terrace, has completed 25 years of Chris- tian education in Terrace. Centen-. nial Christian School opened its doors to its first students in September 1966. At that time the school offered an education pro- gram to approximately 60 stu- dents in Grades | to 6. | But the history of Centennial Christian School goes farther than that first school day in 1966. ° More than. !0 years prior, in 1955, the Terrace Calvin Christian School Society was formed by members of the Terrace Christian Reformed Church. The first mem- bers who formed this society actively pursued fund raising, property searching and program planning for a Christian school. Their work came to fruition in September 1966. Centennial Christian School first operated in facilities rented from the Christian Reformed Church. — When the new church was com- pleted in 1966, classroom space was made available to the school society. The three spacious class- rooms served the school well. After about 10 years it became necessary to have an additional classroom and a portable was erected to meet this need. For the next 10 years the school provided Christian education to students in Kindergarten through Grade 7. The school society always had a © vision of having a school building of its own. In the mid-1980’s the plans came closer to reality with the acquisition of land through generous supporting members and with a growing building fund. Finally, after renting facilities for 22 years Centennial Christian School moved into its own facili- ty in the spring of 1989. The facil- ity consisted of five classrooms, a library, gymnasium, and office space. Due to growing: enrolment and addition of higher grades, the following two years involved expansion and completion of facilities. In September 1991 Centennial Christian School opened its doors Sports store joins Source for Sports All Seasons Sporting Goods has made a change. The facilities now include 10 class- rooms along with gymnasium, office space and a teacher work- room.:Extensive renovations have been:completed: to the adventure playground and the school grounds. The years have seen many changes at Centennial Christian ‘School. These changes are the, result of the long-term Christian. vision that society members have had for providing Christian eda- cation for all ages. More’ of these changes have been possible since independent schools now receive. partial funding from the govern- ment through the Independent School Act. Funding levels have changed from zero to 30 percent, to 35 percent, and now to 50 per- cent of the operating cost, based on education in the public school system..This does not include any . funding for building. or grounds- . Parents sending their children to ‘independent schools still pay for — all capital costs and 50 percent of © _ the operating costs. Centennial Christian School continues to attract parents from a - variety of church and denomina- tional backgrounds, From its Reformed church background © start, it has encompassed many Christians from many mainline churches. , _ We praise the ‘Lord for all that has occurred. We plan to'cele- .. brate together Oct. 3 at our 25th anniversary celebration. 7 THE NDP SHOU _ “Mike Harcourt and the NDP are simply missing the point of this election campaign.
