There’s no reason why working people should put up with further police interference in their trade unions, political parties, fraternal organizations, or their indi- vidual private mail. We should make no mistake, the anti-labor record of big bus- iness and its government, .and its state police, marks labor as its enemy. Work- ers will be the prime victims of Trudeau’s authoritarian course. Trudeau announced the new legaliz- ing of criminal acts on Jan. 26. If the solicitor-general had not been forced to resign because of admitted forgery, the bill might already have been before parliament. Illegal mail spying by the Royal Cana- dian Mounted Police over a 40-year period has become too cumbersome for a government fearing for its very exis- _ tence, for a system deep in a crisis it can’t solve. Now, the police will be empowered to snoop into anybody’s mail at any time. . This is typical of the alarming moves to the right by the Trudeau government, moves which have as their goal the further extortion from the working people of the costs of the system’s crisis. All down the line workers are footing more of the bill for capitalism’s concen- tration of wealth and power in a few hands. Mass unemployment, soaring in- flation, ruinous rents, stagnating pro- duction, cutbacks in numerous social benefits are all part of the class battle. The “Anti-Inflation Board’s” attack on collective bargaining is a prime example. Mail tampering is a convenient way for the RCMP to step up its role in under- mining labor’s fightback by splitting and sabotage of the trade union movement. It’s time to tell the government in a loud, clear, united voice: stop the at- tempts to intimidate and harass workers! Kill this police-state law, keep the RCMP’s paws out of our mail! Combat push to the right! The federal government is moving in a steady course toward the right of the political spectrum. What that means for the working class is more assaults on living standards, civil rights, and on the trade union movement. : Means of coercion and intimidation are being beefed up while living stan- dards are undercut. We see the evi- dence every day. — ue Liberal government attempts to en- tangle the labor movement in its tripar- tite snare have been renewed lately, and leaders of the Canadian Labor Congress are to meet with the Cabinet at any moment. This is good reason for work- ers to go on the alert. Government direction is undeniable. Mass unemployment and soaring infla- -tion, profits sky-high, are more than a blow at working-class standards. They can be used to weaken working-class clout, strengthen the hand of the corpo- rations — and to force workers to pay the cost of the system’s deep crisis. To cover .up’ systematic efforts to degrade and cheat jobless workers at the Unemployment Insurance Commission, Trudeau is blowing $1-million in tax money on advertising accusing us of cheating the UIC. A corruption-ridden -government is in a fine position to preach to people who work for a living — when they find jobs! It’s a, crude excuse to deny workers benefits, try to frighten them off, and force compliance with anti-labor policies. What’s more the ads lie. A survey shows fewer than three in 100 break the “complicated unemployment rules,” and fewer.than three in 1,000 can be charged with an offence. The same clique refuses to cut taxes - on low-incomes, but squanders $3.5- billion a year on armaments, money which could create useful production for Canada and her people. Some of those arms are for use against workers who strike or de- monstrate when they are squeezed beyond endurance! Special units are being trained for “civilian control”. Government moves to right-wing methods include whitewashing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who have spied on and tried to undermine the labor movement for decades. Now they are to have legal rights to steal mail and use it to the capitalist system’s advantage. Tory rednecks joining the Liberal Party say it is more amenable to right wingers. The Liverals are better “enfor- cers” in fact, because they hold power. The Tories in power federally would wipe out labor’s gains at something of a record rate, much as the Liberals are trying to do. These two parties, bankers, directors of corporate monopolies, the big busi- ness media, the military are in full cry: Keep wages down! Slash social expendi- tures! Hamstring the unions! More productivity! Tighten your belts! About productivity, a recent Confer- ence Board of Canada study shows output per man hour rising faster here than in USA. Productivity is already higher in wood, about the same in auto, and almost the same in metal products. In all durable goods, Canadian produc- tivity rated 94% to 98% of that in USA. But the ruling class goes on using the media, the courts, police and legislation to buttress its assaults on workers’ living standards and on expectations of a productive life. Recently, 22 senior corporate execu- tives emerged from a tete-a-tete with Trudeau and Co., backing government fiscal and monetary policies, and oppos- ing income tax cuts for workers. On this background labor leaders are called to a private talk with the Trudeau team. It is hardly surprising then if workers see the urgent need for the whole labor movement to fight back harder than it has done in any recent period, and to strengthen their own leadership in battling to protect the rights of working people.
