Friday, HARD WORK yields results, Terrace Bluebsck swimmers proved that in no uncerlain terms at the McDonald’s Ir-itational meet in Prince Rupert. Seven medals, five pool records and host cf provincial championship qualifying times shuwed coach Mike Carlyle’s ob- jectives are being achieved. Early in the season he’d made it Clear the club was not concemed with winning meets, The results of races at that stage were not ultimately what counted, he said, adding the plan was steady improvement peaking in the championships. The Jan. 21-23 meet indicated everything is going according to that schedule, Marina Checkley is a good ex- ample. Taking overall goid in her age group, the 12-year-old im- proved her times in six of the seven events she racedin. — That included. breaking _ the AAA qualifying mark in four events and slashing three seconds off the 11-12 years girls’ 200m Back pool record. Aimee Peacock and Tori MacKenzie continued their tune up for this weekend’s Senior MEDALLISTS. Aimee Peacock (eft to right), Marina Checkley, Jason Kumpolt, Chris Kerman, Kevin Andolfatto, Audrey Erb and (nct shown) Tori MacKenzie helped the Bluebacks come away from the recent Prince Rupert swim meet with seven medals. Fast, faster, too fast! BLUEBACKS ALWAYS want to swim faster, but once in a while they can overdo it, Ask Stacey Parr and Jamie Kerman, Both broke the AAA barrier in races at the McDonald’s In- vitational «meet in Prince Rupert and promptly eliminated themselves from those events at next month’s AA championships. Parr knocked herself out of twe events while Kerman will now have to sit out the 50m Free. Dylan Evans came close to doing the same, scaring the AAA time in both his 56m and 100m Back. To make the trip to a provin- cial championship, Blueback coach Mike Cariyle explained, swimmers have to qualify in enough events to make it worth while. The trip down south is an ex- pensive one just to get one or two swims, he pointed out. And the trio had already made their quota. ‘We'd bought their tickets,’ Carlyle pointed out. But a few quick scratches ensured they can still anticipate an active weekend. provincials, also toppling pool records. Peacock lowered the mark in both the 100m and 200m Breast while MacKenzic sct a new Rupert record for the 200m Back. They finished with overall sil- ver and bronze medalsin the girls “> 15 years and up division. Chris Kerman provided the other two record breaking per- formances.in the Boys 11-12 years 200m Breast and 200m Back, carving no less than nine seconds off the latter. He also came away with overall gold in that division, Bronze medals were collected by Jason Kumpolt, Audrey Erb and Kevin Andolfatto. While obviously pleased with those results, Carlyle highlighted the performances of a number of other Bluebacks. Marcie Pritchard, 12, exploded in the 200m Breast to slice more ~ thari 12 seconds off her previous best. 100m Breast gave her enough qualifying times to book a berth al the AAs. ‘All her hard work paid off,’’ Carlyle noted. Julie Vanderlee, another who has been working hard over the past few wecks, was also on fire, Having just tumed 13 and therefore moved up an age group, she posted four AA times to ensure she too makes the trip. And Jan MacCormac picked up two more qualifying times to bring to 10 the number of Bluebacks heading for the AA Pprovincials. That’s more than double last year’s number, Carlyle pointed out. There’s been a similar improve- ment at the AAA level, he added, with seven heading for Kamloops in March compared to just in '93, Kevin Andolfatto used the Prince Rupert to add three more events to his championship fist while Seth Downs camed a berih by stroking to two more qualify- ing times, Not surprisingly, Carlyie sug- gested “It looks good for the -provincials,’’. . Spare an evening for Kids LOCAL BOWLERS will have cash on their minds when they take to the alleys this Saturday. But the focus will not be putting money into their own pockets. The event is B,C, Bowl for Kids night and the ob- jective is to raise as much money as possible for the Variety Club. Over the eight years the money raising event has been held, Terrace has established a reputation for generosity, Last year it contributed more than $2,000 to the Variety Club’s work helping the physically and mentally handicapped. Bowl for Kids province-wide has raised close to a million dollars in that eight years and organizers hope to pass that mark with this year’s effort, Here in Terrace, the night’s bowling takes an eight-game, doubles tournament format. The entry is $50 per pair and there will be prizes to be won. The action gets under way at 7 p.m. But the most important thing to remember is you can’t play unless you bring along a Variety Club pledge sheet, Better still, more than one. ere ay ay CAR RENTAL | Call us today for more information on our great rates, 3779 River Drive @ULLARE } 635-1300 FRENMYT A CAR Scott Welch iw, ODOUR CONTROL SERVICES PET ODOUR - extraction to prevent carpet staining - ‘UN-DO' to neutralize odour SMOKE ODOUR -Thermo-fogging - odour conteractants WATER/SEWER _ - dryingservices Ce) - ‘MICROBAN’' to control mildew gummy and bacterial growth «e oy 635-3558 eatin That performance plus a fast Ask About Our Chocolates &Mowelland+ Qo VALENTINES DAY SPECIALS ~ Roses 7 | 95 . . up (Giftboxed or Fancy Cello)... ~ Sweetheart $ Bud Vase (with Flowers)... 25 95 *21.95 ~ Glass Swan (with Rose & Valentine Balloon) Balloon Magic (Flowers & Chocolates inside: a Balloon) @ Tuxedo & Pink Panther Deliveries..............
