DY “tag es oh 3 a — i ae —— Ahalf mile deep in a mountain near Colorado Springs is the NORAD command centre, jointly staffed by Americans and Canadians, Trident 1 | The long range (4,600) Trident ICMB (above) will be fired from the Trident submarines. The missile, 34 tt. long and 6 ft. in diameter, can carry up to 10 nuclear warheads. Minuteman 111 The U.S. has 550 land based 38 ton Minutemen 111. Each carries three independently targeted nuc- lear warheads with a range of 8,000 miles, and the force of 510 kilotons of TNT. 1940s G.B. Connally, ex-President L.B. Johnson's personal friend and the former secretary of the U.S. Navy, whom the right-wing Democrats want to nominate for the presidency in the future, worked in the administration of the Boeing Corp. ~ And now let us turn to Western Ger- many. Franz Josef Strauss, the leader of the most reactionary group of the right-wing CDU/CSU (Christian Dem- -cfati¢ Union and Christian Socialist _ Union) coalition and revenge-seeker, is _Close to the Messerschmitt concern, As othe Germans say, even the-‘‘sparrows One» the roofs are chirping about this.’’ As minister of defence in the 1950s F.J. Strauss put this concern back on its feet by providing it with contracts from the Bundeswehr (West.German army). In France P, Anxionnaz, the former secretary of state for the defence min- istry and general secretary of a party of right-wing radicals, is a member of the board of the Dassault Co., the leading circraft construction monopoly. It is worth noting that this politician was the grand master of the Great East Mason Lodge over a period of several years. This lodge wielded special influence on French politicians. Let us add another example. This per- sonality is from a relatively small coun- try, namely the Netherlands, which is also a member of NATO. Until recently Prince Bernhard occupied an especially privileged position there. He was inspector-general of the Dutch Armed Forces. A closer look revealed that at the same time he is a member of the board of the Fokker arms-manufacturing concern which is closely linked with similar com- panies in the USA and the FRG. ‘ The list could be extended by adding a ~ dozen distinguished names and hundreds of less distinguished ones. But this ts ly necessary. The newspaper is not an investigator. ects And now the answer to the question in the title. : The death merchants’ international exists. This is a real historical fact, one that is confirmed by documents. What Was it created for? : Not merely for the purpose of techni- cal cooperation between the military- in- dustrial firms. Not only for the exchange of patents and licenses, the division of markets, joint plunder of state budgets and fixing of maximum prices for mass destruction weapons. All these motives exist. But at the same time thére is another’, highly impor- tant purpose —a political one. The arms manufacturers have joined hands to act and scheme behind the scenes and thus constantly to inhibit detente, to promote and even accelerate the arms race. This is being achieved by exerting constant pressure on the Western governments, on the bourgeois parties and NATO. Philosophy of History We can go even further and deeper to deal with the sphere of the philosophy of got to in actual fact? | ~ In the past none of its apologists could have believed this to be possible. A sec- ret ‘association of billionaires has been created to accelerate a process which amounts to a slide to global disaster. In other words, having reached the final stage of its development, capitalism is risking the physical (and not only the social) existence of mankind. Could any- body but science‘fiction writers have conceived a situation liké this? Maoist China is ‘establishing direct contact with the ring of monopolies manufacturing mass destruction weapons. It was recently reported that Peking representatives were conducting talks in Bonn with the Messerschmitt concern on the purchasing of military helicopters for the PRC. This is apparently only the beginning of a series of business deals. Zbigniew Brzezinski, assistant to the U.S. president, in an interview October 10, 1977, said that in the event of nuclear wart only about 10% of mankind would perish. He added that approaching the question from a purely speculative and theoretical standpoint this was not yet the end of mankind. I do not know who helped Brzezinski to make these calculations. According to his speculative estimate, 400 million people killed is not so much. Mao Tse-tung believed that as a result of nuc- lear war half of mankind would perish, i.e., two thousand million people. He emphasized that there was nothing terri- ble about this. The ideology of the death merchants’ international is close to that of Maoism. However, neither the former, nor the ‘fatter ideology will have a decisive say. The’ decisive role will be played by the ideology of peace-loving mankind. The people stand for life and not for death. history: ‘Where has modern capitalism —— PROTEST BRAZIL’S NAZI HAVEN BRASILIA — Brazil’s news media has protested the fact that Brazil has become a haven for Nazi war criminals. The Jornal do Brasil daily oe said that the arrest of Gustav Franz Wagner is an example of this. Wagner, 66, was former deputy chief of the Nazi concentration camp at Treblinka in Nazi occupied Poland; he is wanted for complicity in the murder of 700,000 people. But the Jornal do Brasil said: ‘‘This butcher was so confident that he would go unpunished and unmolested in Brazil that he did not even bother to change his name.”’ BLACK CHILDREN HELD IN MAXIMUM SECURITY CAPE TOWN — At least six Black children are being held prisoner on Robben Island, apartheid South Africa’s maximum security prison, “‘Justice’’ Minister Kruger was forced to reveal in parliament in Cape Town last week. Kruger said the six children had been convicted on ‘‘sabotage’’ charges and sentenced to five years each. ‘‘Sabotage”’ under South African law could consist of sticking out your tongue at a policeman. FULBRIGHT SPEAKS UP FOR DETENTE WASHINGTON — J. William Fulbright, former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a TASS interview that he favors détente with the Soviet Union. Fulbright said some members of the Carter administration involved in determining policy towards U.S.-Soviet relations, are still thinking in cold war categories. He also criticized the anti-Soviet and anti-Cuban campaign now being de- veloped in the U.S. Fulbright called for mutually advantageous cooperation that would include an early agreement on the SALT treaty. 40% OF CHINA’S BUDGET FOR WAR MOSCOW — The Soviet Union has accused China of spending over 40% of its budget on preparations for a new world war. The accusation in the newspaper Pravda said the Chinese leaders were undermining détente by all means available and that the foreign policy of Peking is a serious destabilizing factor on the international situation. “Tt is precisely China that is calling for the creation of a ‘united front’ with the participation of the imperialist forces and world reaction to fight against world socialism, against all forces that stand for interna- tional peace and security, for national independence and social : progress.” PRAVDA EXAMINES U.S. STAND AGAINST DETENTE » MOSCOW — In a lengthy editorial, the Soviet Communist Party — newspaper, Pravda, has severely criticized the twists and turns of U.S. policy as the Carter administration steers a course away from detente. Why is Washington making a 180° turn from this only solution accepta- ble for all? asks a commentator. Who will benefit by this? The Soviet — Union believes that it will be those who make: profit by making and selling weapons and who are bent on relying on strength in world affairs. Such a policy also is to the liking of those people in the west who are unable to resolve the problem of inflation, unemployment, energy and slums, and want to beat the drums of war in order to distract the world’s attention from their ineptitude. CHINA ORDERS VIETNAMESE DIPLOMATS OUT HANOI —- Peking has ordered the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to close three of its consulates in southern China, Radio Hanoi said June 20. Radio Hanoi said Peking has ordered SRV diplomats to leave Canton, Kumming and Manking, leaving Vietnamese representation only in Peking. On the-same date as this near break in diplomatic relations, the SRV foreign ministry asked Peking for clarification on the arrival of Chinese warships in Vietnamese ports to pick up Vietnamese residents of Chinese origin.
