A2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 14, 2000 Hospital hopes it has found solution to specialist gap HEALTH CARE officials expect to fill one gap in speci- ally services here this week by having a general practi- tioner certified to do caesarean sections. Dr. Willem Fourie will then go on an on-call rotation to provide emergency services during the evenings and overnight periods. He’ll be paired with obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Lani Almas who is now by herself since a second one, Dr. Sheila Watson, has moved away. Because Dr. Almas could not be expected to be on- call every night of the week, health care officials set up a system whereby pregnant women requiring caesareans would be transferred first to Kitimat or secondly, to Prince Rupert, said Terrace and Area Community Health Council chief executive Dieter Kuntz. Departures and arrivals THIS WEEK marks the beginning of some changes in The Terrace Standard newsroom. Leaving Terrace after two years are news/community Dr. Fourie first needs to do three caesareans under the supervision of Dr. Almas, after which time he can then be certified, said Kuntz. “Dr. Fourie volunteered for this and brings with him expertise from South Africa. What he needs to do is to be certified to do caesareans in Canada,” Kuntz conti- nued, It’s expected that Dr. Fourie will have done the three caesareans sometime this week to meet the certification requirements, said Kuntz. At the same time, the health council has agreed to find and to pay. for the temporary hiring of an obstetrician/gynecologist, said ‘Kuntz. - “This is a stop-gap until we can find a permanent re- - placement after which time we can go back to normalcy,” he added. ~ The lack of continuous on-call emergency obstetri- .cian services has been heavily criticized and came up at . a regular meeting of the health council last week. ‘At least one pregnant woman from Terrace has al- ready been sent to Kitimat to have her baby. That city does have general practioners already certi- fied to do caeserian operations. And there is a . gynecologist/obsetrician on staff at the hospital in Prince Rupert. reporter Alex Hamilton and news/sports reporter Christ- - - iana Wiens. ; Hamilton has left for Vancouver Island, where she lakes a new job at the Courtenay-Comox Record, which is owned by Island Publishers, an affiliated company to Cariboo Press which owns The Terrace Standard. Wiens leaves this weekend to go to The Prince George Free Press, which is part of Cariboo Press. Taking over this week as news/community reporter is ‘ Jennifer Lang. She worked for four years with the former: Terrace Times and most recently for the Kitimat North- ern Sentinel and The Lakes District News in Burns Lake, Both of those papers are sisters ta The Terrace Standard. Arriving next week as news/sports reporter is Keith Freeman. He is a new graduate of the Langara college journalism program in Vancouver. Another new face in the newsroom in recent weeks has been University of Victoria writing program student Sarah Glen. She arrived in early May and is here for the summer on a co-op program work term. If she looks familiar it’s because she spent her high school years here and is a graduate of Caledonia Sr. Secondary. From front Greens crank it up to West Fraser says most of the intact valleys in West Fraser’s holdings aren’t being considered by the LRMP for protection, “We are also very concerned about the potential fate of these areas if their future is left in the hands of the Kalum Land and Resources Management Plan,” the let- | ter said.
