Gov’t chases smoke sellers ROUGHLY 25 per cent of stores acrass the northwest are selling cigaretics to minars. That’s the findings of a recent series of com- pliance checks conducted throughout the Skeena Health Unit. The province recently made it illegal to sell cigareltes to anyone under the age of 19. Stores were given over a year to adopt to the new law, and now they’re being checked province-wide, In order to do the checks, the Skcena Health Unit used tecnage decoys under the age of 16, who appeared tobe 16r younger, Throughout the region the results varied wide- ly. Terrace and Kitimat had nearly full com- pliance rate, However in the Hazeltons, only 71 per cent of stores checked complied with the law. In Houston that figure was 70 per cent, The worst numbers came from Smithers, which had a compliance rate of 66 per cent and Prince Rupert which had a rate of 57 per cent. In total 24 stores out of 92 were found to be in viola- tion. However, the health unit’s Russ Scltenrich, warned against reading too much into the num- bers, He said there was a lot of variation in using the teen decoys: Checks were conducted at a wide’ variely of times and days. In general, checks done during the day had a higher rate of compliance than those in the evening. And all communities were not checked at both day and night, ADOPT A WRESTLER The Terrace Wrestling Teams of the boys and girls are very grateful to alt the companies and individuals who so generously adopted us by conirib- uting in the purchase of our warm-up suits. Also the gender of the teen buyer appeared to make a difference, since some stores will reportedly only sell to boys and not to girls, Stores who weren't in compliance with the Tobacco Sales Act were given a waming Ietter. The health unit will be following these Setters up with further compliance checks carly this year. If retailers are found tobe guilty a second. time, charges will likely be laid. At this stage a store can be fined, Any further violations can result in the suspension of the store’s licence to sell cigarettes. 1996 FORD TAURUS SEDANS & WAGONS News In Brief Need a job?
