Helen Harris says she is selling the prop- erty that Helen’s Play and Learn Centre now sits on and says she will not be reopen- ing it. “My daycare days are over,’’ she said last week. The 20-space daycare centre and 20-space preschool and after-school centre on Hal- liwell Ave. — which closed Dec. 20 — was---- particularly important to parents of some children who attended Uplands Elementary School. ; “This will have a major impact and it’s all happening very fast,’’ said Cocau Schau of The Family Place. ‘The after-school care closure has a huge impact on those parents from Uplands who use that pro- gram.”’ Schau said closures such as this have hap- pened before, But they have been’ pre- schools and that has less ofan overall! im- pact because children who go there tend to have parents who don’t work. There are estimates that more than 100 families may be affected by the business’ closure, she added. Harris says pressure to stay open won't change her mind. - 7 ‘There: seems: to- be -a-great: deal: of con- troversy over me closing my daors,’’ she said. ‘“Bui due to a family crisis, that’s what I’m doing,"’ ; She said the buyers of the property are buying it as a home, so-there’s ilo prospect of the. business continuing under different ownership, She added that she’s only sell- ing the property, not the business, Your In Memoriam gift is a lasting tribute. McCreery guilty in killing TIM McCREERY was sentenced to life im- prisonment with no chance of parole for 25 years for the Aug. 15, 1994 killing of Landis Heal. ‘A Smithers jury found the 21-year-old Hazelton man guilty of first-degree murder. ‘McCreery had confessed on videotape to undercover police officers, thinking they were drug dealers trying to recruit him. He admitted on tape shooting Heal with a .45-calibre handgun. Prosecutors said the evidence showed McCreery did it to clear a drug debt to dealer Dana Winter, who wanted Heal dead for ‘‘ratting”’ to police. Winter was to stand trial as a co-accused, but died of a drug overdose in Vancouver before the trial.
