hus Anna Dodd I’m a resident of Thornhill and have seen the Thornhill Volunteer Fire De- partment responding to fires efficiently. They seem to be fair- ly prompt. The firefighters tend to get to disaster sites quickly. Geoff Woollacott From a technical side there are three aspects to the ques- tion as commercial, industrial and residential prop- erties have to be taken into considera- tion. The response time for firefighting crews to get to loca- tions is generally determined by the distance sites are from the fire hall. Terrace is spread out so at times the physical layout can pose difficulties for firefighters. Local crews responded well to the recent In- dustrial accident in- volving a tank car leak at the Canadian National Railway yard In town. Loca- tlon of fire hydrants will also affect effi- clency concerning firefighting abilities. Since Terrace is so spread out it might be wise to consider a secondary fire sta- tion on the bench which would house a pumper truck. The Terrace Review asked: Do you think fire protection in Terrace is adequate to ensure a reasonable level of public safety? Percy Moorhouse | think 80. Firefighting crews are pretty quick on the bali when It comes to responding to a blaze. Back up crews also seem to be effective and help by ambulance per- sonnel, the police, who block off roads and redirect traffic, is also efficient. | think the whole team does a pretty good job in coordination with the volunteer and permanent fire- men. Joan Cox | am a resident of Thornhill and | think the volunteer fire- fighters In our com- munity are a very good, competent and community minded crew. They do more than just provide fire protection for local residents. They often go into the schools and teach young people fire protec- tion techniques and are willing to give tours of the fire hall! to a variety of groups such as Scouts, Guides and Cubs. The volunteers are always willing to teach youngsters about fire prevention safety. _ A Wednesday smile Terrace Review — Wednesday, August 20, 1986 5 :. Rocky Gray (center) with daughters Andrea (left) and Vera, take time to enjoy the summer weather together. Daniele Berquist photo Lionel Curts | haven't given the question too much thought. | have been a resident of Terrace for 35 years and have not had a fire yet. | suppose a person doesn’t think about fire protection much. unless you have a fire yourself. | have noticed, however, that a number of homes have not been able to be saved by firefighting crews. They don’t seem to get too many of the larger blazes out before homes are demolished. There are a lot of old buildings around town, some with sawdust for insula- tion, that pose fire hazards as once ig- nited they go up quickly in flames. Mike Wilson From what | understand, yes. Based on manpower and equipment, to my knowledge, the fire department is adequate but like any operation they can always use more manpower and more equipment. Art Hoving If you are talking about the District of Terrace, yes. The municipality has a well trained staff and the department has up-to-date fire equip- ment. Having per- sonally worked with them as a represen- tative for the Thorn- hill Volunteer Fire Department, | have found the.crew to be a real help. We have a mutual aid agree- ment In place and in case of a major disaster both depart- ments cooperate with firefighting ef- forts. There is a referendum coming up in November con- cerning firefighting requirements for areas outside the District of Terrace. With the current system nobody has to respond. to those fires and action is taken by the Thorn- hill crew on a volunteer basis only if men and equip- ment are not busy elsewhere. {if the referendum passes Terrace could send a fire truck and Thorn- hill would respond with tankers on an on-call basis. The equipment we take from Thornhill to fight fires out of the jurisdiction Is privately owned. | NO W... Ar Cc ade continued from page 4 should consider carefully whether the taxpayer wants to pay higher taxes to round up these kids because they have been run out of the only places they had to go. Of course there is one bright spot in this sug- gestion. If this by-law passes and all these kids are hanging out on the streets with nothing to do but cause trouble then maybe RAFT will start to get the support they deserve. Maybe RAFT will be able to get past the talking stage and ac- tually set up a drop-in centre for these same kids who are at the ar- cades. A by-law restricting the hours of operation for arcades, and some sort of guidelines the owner would have to abide by to keep his business licence would be the best solution to this problem.
