Close to Salvus

An unusual fatality, involving
the lives of an Indian woman and
her son, is reported from Salvus,
On Saturday, James Pearse, an
Indian, with his wife and two

sons, the latter aged 19 and 9
respectively, were proceeding
down-stream in a large gasoline
launch when engine trouble dev-
eloped. While Pearse was in
the engine-room endeavoring
to correct the trouble, the boat
struck a snag and the stern sank
rapidly, flooding the cabin. The
father seized the elder boy and
placed him into a canoe, but on
attempting to rescue his wife and
younger son, found it impossible
to gain entrance to the cabin, al-
though he tried both stern and
bow, and worked below water
until nearly exhausted. He then
managed to get into his canoe
and tow the launch ashore, where
he recovered the body of. his
son and later tnat of his wife
after he had baled the water out
of the craft,
The occurrence was reported
by the section foreman at Salvus
to the provincial police at Ter-
'race ori Saturday; atid: Constable
Mancor immediately went to Sal-
vus and assisted in getting the
bodies removed to Prinee Rupert.
At the inquest held there on
Wednesday a verdict of accident-
al death was returned.
Valuable assistance was ren-
dered by Section Foreman N.
Wozney and his erew, and York-
ey Edwards provided a resting
place for the unhappy family
until the removal of the bodies.
Pearse had the additional mis-
fortune to lose his whole catch
of furs and also his tools.

Highways Scheme

‘Vaneouver, Dee. 6.—Plans to
spend twenty million dollars on
highway development in B. C.
within the next five years, have
been. prepared by Hon,- Dr. W.
H. Sutherland, minister of public
works, and will formally be
brought before the legislature
this week for ratification. The
scheme will jink up existing
roads, so as to make a trans-
