As- sisting in the organizing of rebel forces (supplied by the big serf owners) were three kaloons (members) of the ka- sha (the local six-member government of autonomous Tibet). A fourth kaloon turn- ed tratior in 1957 and fled to Kalimpong where he helped instigate the rebellion. Two kaloons were patriots, and one was wounded in the fighting. Although serious fighting did not break out in Lhasa, the capital city, until March 19, the rebellious activities of the Tibetan traitors have been of fairly long duration. These rebels- represent im- perialism and the most re- actionary big serf owners. | Since the Chinese People’s Liberation Army entered Ti- bet in 1951, (after signing of the Seventeen Article Agree- ment for the peaceful libera- tion of Tibet) the rebels have been plotting to tear up this agreement and preparing for armed rebellion. (The agreement stipulates Lhasa, capital of Tibet, was centre .of the revolt. that the Tibetan army must be reorganized, and that /Ti- bet’s social system — serfdom — must be reformed in ac- cordance with the wishes of the people. These reforms have been blocked by the re- actionary majority in the gov- ernment.) In 1957 one kaloon, Yuto Chahsidongchu, fled to Kalim- pong — the centre of the re- bellious elements’ activities abroad to help organize the rebellion from that base. Arms were brought in from foreign countries, Chiang Kai- shek forces ‘airdropped sup- plies, and helped set up radio stations. Between May and June of last year, on the instructions of the Tibetan local govern- ment and the upper strata re- acionary clique, the rebel ban- dits invaded Chamdo, Dinch- ing, Nagchuka and Loka. They destroy ed communications, plundered the people, com- mitted arson and murder, and attacked agencies and army units of the Central People’s Government. The local government of Tibet was repeatedly asked to punish the rebel elements and maintain social order, but refused to act. Mistaking mag- nanimity for ~ weakness, the government and_ serfowners reasoned: ‘The Han people can be frightened off; in the past nine years they have not had the courage to lay even a fin- ger on our most wonderful and sacred system of serfdom. “If we attack them, they can only enjoin us to sup- press the rebellion. “If we bring a large” group of rebel forces to Lhasa from other places toxhit them with, they will surely run away. “Tf we fail, we run to India; India has sympathy for us and may help us. “There is the powerful United States which may also (Continued on Back Page) See TIBET What's direct labor cost on a $299 Washing Machine— $182.70 ? $ 82.70 ? $ 827?
