NATURE'S WORLDS ‘with Dennis Horwood ‘We've all seen movies and pictures of African animals In’ such an arid: country. temporary drinking areas mean the difference between life ‘ and death. In North America, we too have our waterholes. : Although not as vital to survival, they are an interesting part gathering around waterholes. of our natural heritage. Waterholes in this country range from 4 lake down to a patch of wet mud. Itis in the muddy spots that butterilies, especially swallowtails, often gather in large numbers. -Just why they choose wet mud isnot clearly understood. Swallowtalls, like most butterflies, are active on ‘sunny days, By mid-afternoon, they inevitably find a muddy sport and after considerable flutterings and by-passes, alight on __ the rich, black soil. Tnitlally it appears they are. just ‘drinking, essentially quenching their thirst. But many of the mud holes are. within a metre of a large lake or pond. The yellow and black swallowtails could easily drink ; at the water’sedge. So why do they seek out the muddy areas? A probable reason for thisis that, while drinking the water, they are also picking up dissolved minerals at the same time. “This seems plausible, since other animals, frequent certain areas for similar reasons. Moose, goats and deer have all been known to regularly visit localities that have some . unique taste or mineral content in the soil. These communial gatherings help the butterflies In another way. Since upwards of 36 or marc congregate atone place, there is a much better chance of mixéd breeding. Local populations have a better chance ta meel and mate i alt eee a) rn Twenty: ‘swallowtalls make for a beautiful display of yellow and black. with others that they would not normally contact. In this way, genetic information is circulated throughout a larger area. Whatever the reason may be, it is rather fascinating to watch the large, colorful insects pushing and shoving while they sip the mineral water. it is also an ideal photographic opportunily. Swallowtails are norrially elusive to all but the most patient photographer. But while drinking, they are almost totally preoccupied and can be easily approached to within a few centimetres. Watch for them on hot days this summer as they‘ gather to have a drink. “hassle,” he said. =~ - the falls-into.a:‘park is an ‘ regional district... =" Malcolm Lee received $200 jis fines,: one day in jail and two years probation Friday on. charges relating to an attempted break and enter. .
