JESSIE GIES PHOTO Students find jobs despite tough times AS SUMMER draws to a close, northern human resource centres have tallied up their totals for studént summer employ- ment. Last summer, there were I11 job post- ings, according to Terrace summer em- ployment officer Tamara Sweet. This year, the goal was set at 75; a lower number was anticipated because of the recent economic downturn. That goal has been surpassed — figures gathered indicate 91 students found work through the local student employment centre. However, 18 of the 109 students who applied for jobs at the centre did not find work. , “It's unfortunate,” Sweet said. Sweet is a.student out of Prince George and wrapped up the affairs of the student employment office here the mid- dle of the month. “I’m said to see the summer end,” she said. “I have definitely gained some life experience and have met some, wonderful people along the way.” Airport use on the rise AIRPORT PASSENGER figures so far this year are up over the same period of 2002. As of the end of July, 51,738 people passed through the airport compared to 51,051 to the end of July last year. Gains were registered in January and February of this year over the same two months of 2002, reflecting the success of the airport’s new instrument landing sys- tem which came on line last November. In January 2002, 6760 passengers passed through and 44 flights were missed because of weather compared to eight missed’ flights and 6,889 passengers in January of this year. our way of life. The instrument landing system allows aircraft to land in conditions that would prevented them from doing so in past years and removes a criticism that has dogged the airport for years of being an unreliable location. The 51,738 passenger count to the end of July this year is less than the equival- ent period figure of 57,060 for 2001 but more than the 2000 equivalent period of 50,140 passengers.
