The two-year-old volunteer
placement centre connects people
who want to donate their time
with agencies and non-profit
groups who want them.

But Tyler says the volunteers
often do such 4 great job that the
different agencies sometimes find
ways to make them paid staff.

“One of the side effects is that
a fot of our voluntcers have got-
ten jobs,’’ she says. “They've
gone on to higher education and
they've potten off welfare.”

So far this year, says Tyler, 23
unemployed people have found

_paying jobs through their

volunteer efforts.

holidays

DRIVERS ARE being urged to
tie one on this holiday season —
ared ribbon, that is.

The annual red ribbon
campaign is an effort to remind
motorists not to drink and drive,

The ribbons are available at
most local gas stations and other
outlets.

Also underway is the RCMP’s
annual Christmas Counterattack,
which runs through to Jan. 3.

Police officers will be conduct-
ing road checks to ensure drivers

“haven’t been drinking.

Drinking driving was the lead-
ing cause of death on B.C.’s high-
ways in 1993 — killing 160
people, injuring 5,440 others and
resulting in millions of dollars in
properly damage.

Eighteen people were injured
here in 1994 in motor vehicle ac-
cidents involving alcohol, accord-
Ing to Terrace RCMP. One per-
son was killed.

The numbers are down from
1993, but they’re not down far
enough,

ICBC estimates 21 cents out of
every. premium ‘dollar is spent
repairing . the damage.done by
drinking drivers,

without the pressure of a real job.
The centre started first as a
Seniors Information Centre. Now

“two years old, it has enjoyed

dramatic success.
They now have 312 volunteers
registered and some 66 agenices

and non-profit groups parlicipa-—

ting.

Volunteers placed by the bureau
have contributed more than
13,500 hours in the first nine
months of 1994.

And non-profit groups fom
Deep Creek Hatchery to K’san
Howse Sociely’s crisis line credit
the volunteer bureau for their sur-
vival.

Now Tyler and the bureau are
ready for a new challenge.

City council has carmarked
$5,000 in its provisional budget
for 1995 to help the bureau start a
“Volunteers for Seniors’’ pro-
gram.

Rather than assign n volunteers to

agencies, the program would con-

friendly visit,- telephone contact,
help with shoppping or help with
transportation,

There are 1,800 seniors in the
community, Tyler notes, but only

260 are members of the Happy.

“These are the well seniors,’
she says. **These seniors are to be
commended for the volunteering
they do to help other seniors.
However, they cannot help every-
one,”

“T get phone calls all the time
from people who fall through the
cracks,’ she said. ‘Their
families have left, their friends
start to dic and they get isolated.”’

Seniors who can maintain their
independence stay healthier
longer, she says.

They also plan to work with
other volunteer groups such as
the Helping Handyman Socicty,
-Which helps local seniors with
yard work, snow removal, and
minor house repairs, such as in-
stalling grab bars in bathrooms.
