8 Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 19, 1986 Kermode basketball girls shine by Len Harrington The Caledonia Ker- mode Girls Senior High School Basketball team overcame an onslaught of adverse publicity brought on by some Ter- race teachers and came within a whisker of win- ning the B.C. Double **4 A’? Championship at Abbotsford on the March 8 weekend. After losing 57-55 to Kelowna in their opener at the 16-team series, the Kermodes came up with ‘three-straight victories — each one more im- pressive than the last. Their final game saw ' the Kermodes bounce New Westminster 72-60 to grab fifth place overall in final stand- dings. In a very deserving honor, Val Philpot was named to the first all-star team, while Caroline Hendry was given honorable mention as an all-star. It was never in doubt against the Hyacks. Coach Dave Crawley’s girls ran up a 40-28 halftime lead and never looked back. Philpot came through with 26 points and the game MVP award to pace the scoring. Hendry added 15, while Jaci Sturn who obviously must have been considered for all- star honors, came through with 10. Colleen Anderson came off the bench to contribute nine points. The fifth-place finish capped an outstanding season for the Kermodes ‘who virtually shrugged off the potentially season-spoiling . efforts imposed against them by “adults’’. Ignoring the pressures levelled at them by media and teachers, the Ker- modes offered fans a4 super, but losing effort in their opener against Kelowna. Down 23-22 at the half, Kermodes were go- ing without their so- called ‘‘chairman-of-the- boards’? — Caroline Hendry. She got into foul trouble and had to ride the bench before eventually getting back in and fouling out. Her rebounding was badly missed, Late in the game, Ker- modes were losing 55-42, They responded with four straight baskets and were down 55-50. Kelowna got a_ two- pointer back, and the Kermodes picked up two more hoops and a foul shot before running out of time. Kelowna won 57-55. It was a heart-breaker, but they came right back to post two victories. Against Kelowna, Val Philpot scored 14 points 4 Val Philpot sparked the Caledonia Kermode girls’ high schoo! basketball team to a fifth-place finish at the recent B.C, finals In Abbotsford. The Terrace athlete is shown with the trophy she won for being named to the tourna- ment’s first all-star team. and was named the game’s most valuable player. Jaci Sturn of- fered a 12-point effort and Stacey Buteau came off the bench to count 10 points, In their second game, the Kermodes scrambled against Chilliwack but came through with a 62-58 win. Chilliwack led 33-32 at the half. Sturn won the game’s MVP honors with a 17-point effort. Philpot again was high scorer with 22 points, while Hendry recovered to offer 15 points. Game three saw the Kermodes post a 76-65 victory over G.P. Vanier of Courtenay. Hendry came through with numerous rebounds and 21 points. She took the game MVP award. Philpot had her third straight solid perfor- mance with 26 points, and Sturn continued her fine play with 19. This set up that battle for 5th and 8th positions against New Westminster. Backed by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, the Terrace and District Teachers’ Association (TDTA) started a work- to-rmmle campaign over local issues. As part of their effort, the teachers apparently asked other teacher associations to urge their school teams not to play Kermodes at the championship series. According to local statistics, 10 to 15 of the 75 school districts in B.C. own’ to support Terrace teachers, However, Bob Blount, commissioner of high school girls’ basketball, pointed out this same situation had arisen in the past and was dealt with by informing teachers the basketball group is non-political and had nothing to do with any teacher pro- blems. Blount gave assurances the Kermodes could play, and play they did without incident. In- structions were issued that any teams refusing to play Terrace would simply default their games to Terrace, and | face possible future suspension from B.C. | playdowns. The lower mainland press, radio and televi- sion people caught hold of the story and tended to blow it way out of proportion, by saying the teachers. federation had declared the Ker- modes ‘‘hot’’. The TDTA denied the ‘‘hot’’ edict, although later a federation official said the rulings did border on a “hot” situation. ‘*Too-much-press’” pressure got to the girls before their opening game.
