As fire a st a Lend of the six-man “fire / overhead team’ which flew from the Prince Rupert region to the Dan fire west of Shushwap Lake in late July, he had run an operation he calls“a great success,” ._ Baek in Prince Rupert after three weeks on the fire ‘site, Pashnik com- mented: there was no confusion and no lack of efficiency. It was a great success. “Once we moved in, the fire control activities were implemented with a >_< —S esd a 0 = uncontrolled—and then it © “Well, then we just got superintendent in charge | the precision ofa military . operation— there were no__ PRINCE RUPERT Fire fighter describes his job goof-ups and there was no wasted effort.” “When we arrived the local ranger had some men fighting our fire, other crews fighting other fires and more fires breaking out all over the place. We moved in and completely took over the DAN Fire, we took the’ total inad off his shoulders, hired crews, set up camp, brought in aircraft and fought it toa standstill. “Once we got it under control, we handed it back -to the ranger and went home.” When a forest fire breaks out, forest service suppression crewsrush to the scene and usuaily. have the blaze under control by 10 a.m. the next day, Pashnik ex- plained. But when his overhead team, or Q+ Group, flew south con- ditions were so hot and dry and so many fires were breaking out that local ranger staff were having serious difficulty coping. “The fire was already at about 700 acres when we arrived, then the wind came up and the fire doubled in size in’ one day,” he noted. “There were only about 40 men on the scene and holding action. “So we just took over control activities and let the ranger staff go to take care of initial assault on other fires in their aren,” ” Once on the job, the six- member team-made up of a fire superintendent, fire boss, camp boss, administrative officer, air services coordinator and ‘expediter’, the man charged with procuring services and equipment without delay--went to work organizing the firefighting effort. The team, with members from Kitimat, Prince. Rupert, and Smithers, were freed for duty in the busy south because of the Prince Rupert Region’s comparatively quiet 1979 fire season. “This is a completely new concept,” explained Pashnik. “The idea is that when things get hot and heavy, as they were all over the south in late July and early August, a team of experts from a quieter area can come in and completely relieve a ranger on a problem fire. “The teams are only supplied at the request of the ranger in the district with the bad fire,” he added, “The team is specially designed to fight what we call ‘project fires'--forest fires so big they muat be fought over a long period of time by special crews which camp near the scene, “Normally, 'Pashnik said, “we do not an- ticipate project fires. The aim of the forest service is to hit fires fast and hard and tostop them before they became problems.” _ However, sometimes high winds, extreme temperatures and ex- - plosively dry fuels mean a fire just gets out of control—and that’s where we come in, : “That's where we came in on this one and, boy, was it ever a project!’ “We had to move in a 150 man camp complete with showers, cooktents and sleeping tents. There were about 5 tents all ‘told, We had to hire the men and operate eight cats and two large helicopters with monsoon buckets." (Monscon buckets are used for dropping fire retardant chemicals from helicopters on troublesome forest fires.) “Let me tell you." said Pashnik, ‘‘we worked some long days. Sometimes the guys were out 16 or 17 hours.” “But it all went very smoothly- I attribute that to the fact that we all knew our jobs.” “Any problems that did come up we were able to nip in the bud.” The concept , which has been discussed in Forest Service circles for some time, worked so well that many experts feel ‘It’s the way we have to go on big fires,’’ said Pashnik. “Officials in the Kamloops Forest Region, where the DAN Fire was located, are going to recommend this to Victoria; that we make several of these groups available in each region. “This winter our will put together a manual for new 0O- Groups. It'll be ready, we hope, by next summer. We'll be able to use some of our experience to refine and improve some of our administrative techniques, for exam- ple.” . Pashnik’s 0-Group was not the only contribution made by Prince Rupert Region firefighters to this summer's efforts in southern B.C, In ad- dition, a second fire overhead team, three- member helicopter-borne rappel suppression teams and four assistant rangers flew south to fight forest fires, 300 BATTERY Guaranteed for 36 months.
