Wednesday, February 2, 1966 TERRACE “Omineca" HERALD, TERRACE, BRITISH COLUMBIA mea There ig a general feeling that e talented children in this area ck the challenge necessary to pprove themselves in their own Mejorids of music or speech. This mpw festival could well play an im- Sprtant role in increasing their u}lf-awareness and so develop the aitent talent in our area, I sin: atrely hope it does, SIAt the time of writing there ve been 98 entry forms return- signifying participation in the st annual Terrace Music and peech Arts Festival. They in- de entries from Kitimat, Prince pert and Kitwanga. The amount interest is most gratifying to all o- have worked hard to plan Bd organize this new venture. gi This .week’s column is devoted the choral speaking section of me Festival and should be of in- est to all those who have sub- tted entries. The success of choral speaking, of all art, lies in the strength of #mmunication. Every poem has ainething to be communicated, mherwise it would never have Fen written. In preparing the pre- gntation, the first task is to de- de what is important about the pem (i.e, the poet’s intent,) and pom then onward, to treat the aapem in a way which will give the mepecst successful form of communi- mation. In choral speaking, as in drama, Sec audience must he able to feel whatever is expressed. It is useless o recite a poem unless the per- onal involvement is projected macom the stage to involve the list- ener. If the audience is involved Rhen there is communication. The problem with which the teacher is faced is how to get the audience involved. The prime factor is one ga Of interest, and this demands-much m thought. A great deal of interest can be added if the teacher escapes from the idea of uniformity. Children do not have to be ar- ranged neatly in two rows, nor do @ they need their hands forever held y at their sides, nor do they have to Bbe dressed in white shirts or, in ® the case of the girls, white blouses. Feet do not have to be together at all times, Vitality must not be Sacrificed at the expense of uni. formity. No children are the same, =so0 why give this pretence? Such m uniformity provides an uninterest- ming visual presentation and very often produces “the choral speak- sing bug,” “where a group, when Placed in front of an audience, is suddenly “bitten” and so produces a lifeless, spiritléss and uninterest- ing presentation, & Even more important than an interesting visual arrangement, is van interesting variety and diver- gsity of voices. Choral speaking edoes not, of necessity, mean that peverything must be said in uni- Eson. There’ should be thought given fto the possible division of voices. msome lines may well be more ef- mective when spoken by a single voice. Try not to neglect the atu- Bdent in your group that has a use: iKalum B ELECTRIC Majo llance * Sale Benes % Electrical Contractor % Residential xe Commercial Corner of Kalum and Park Phone VI 3-2752 Motor Winding StivaL bigiigns ful and interesting means of ex- Pression. Look upon “your gtoup 88 a composer would look upon the instruments of an orchestra. He needs the 'cellos and double. basses to say one thing, and the violas and violins to say another, Wherever possible, use the variety of the volces at your disposal to add effect and interest, There is. no reason whataoever why movement should not be in- cluded to add to the. powers of communication, but it should be limited to simple actTons, so that the emphasis of movement is not distracted from that of the speech, whick is the main medium of com- munication, Sound effects very often stimu- late interest and excitement but make sure that any sound you use ig not implied in the rhythm of the poem, otherwise you are de- feating your own aim of speech communication. After frequent practices you should be able to measure your success by observing the faces of the children you are teaching, If they all register the same moad at the same time then they are by DAVID DOSsOR. adjudicator, all actively involved, There should be no sad faces Im a gay, light: hearted poem, The Speech Arts section of the festival will take place on Satur: day, March 26, 1966, at Clarence Michie] School. It is hoped. there will be trophies for the best primary, the best in- termediate, and the best senior Performance of the day. Page i HELP help bring eel better, KIDNEYS PASS 3 LBS.
