Trudeau’s ‘Cop out’ causes

student unemployment

This summer over half a
million students will be out of
work. That's the result of the
present government’s
opportunities for youth
programme, according to Alan
Pope, president of the
Progressive Conservative youth
education.

Speaking on CBC television
program ‘The Nations
Business,” Pupe charged that
there were over 700,000 other
Canadians unemployed due to
the Trudeau government’s
economic policies. Last year in
most cities, students were

employed for about 5 to 6 weeks.
‘This year they'll be lucky if they
work weekends, he said.

Students don’t want to be free
loaders on society, he said, a
student has to work for at least
three months during
summer in order to pay for his
education, .

The Trudeau government has
failed to give us any real
opportunity to do this.

“He has told young Canadians .
that if they cannot find work, to
try travelling. Last year
thousands hiked from coast to
coast. This produced so many

problems that the government
promised a conference on
transient youth services. Of
course it was cancelled -~- what
young Canadians would call a
cop out.”

“Then he washed his hands of
this problem and has left it to
the ¢ities and municipalities,
whose budgets are already at
the breaking point due to
welfare costs. This summer,
welfare rolls will contain an
increasing percentage of young
people.”

Jean Marchand, Minister of
Regional Economic Expansion,
announced May 20 that
Kootenay Forest Products of
Nelson, B.C., would receive an
incentive under the Regional
Development Incentives Act for
the expansion of its lumber
plant. This project will create
‘an estimated 109 new jobs.
