The sanders which give the
plywood sheets an even finish
and thickness now have an
automatic feed and off-bear-
ing, with rising and lowering
stacks of plywood which elim-
inate strenuous manual work.

An electronic automatic
patcher quickly repairs de-
fects disclosed by the sanding
operation.

A unique feature found in
the PV plywood plant is the
automatic grader and sorter.
This does not entirely elim-
inate a great deal of necessary
visual grading by expert
workers to ensure top quality.

This fully-automated opera-
tion is an omen of the future.

grade. His decision is memor-
ized by the machine, and the
grading into separate bins on
a long grading line is auto-
matically accomplished. Truly
it is a triumph in automation.

The final stages of packag-
ing, wrapping and shipping
are all being improved by
mechanization, for which no

_ end is in sight.

I should direct attention to
the fact that the Interior ply-
wood plants have now de-
veloped a spruce plywood
sheet, made possible by the
invention of a new-type glue.

With this sketchy descrip-
tion of developments in the
plywood manufacturing in-
dustry, I invite members of
our Union to ponder the
future consequences in terms
of working conditions and
employment.
