Wasn’t that the purpose of the Bomare missile which Canada has been depending on for ‘defense’ for many years, and which the USS: quit manufacturing after Canada relieved them of their stockpile? Now the Amchitka type bomb is supposed to ‘neutralize’ an enemy missile. It occurs to me to wonder what radioactive damage would be attained by this ‘defence’ 5-megaton neutralizer? Is it not possible the ‘neutralizing’ explosion will also ‘neutralize’ the country for hundreds of miles? I am of the opinion that the main reason the military have made the neutralizing explanation is because of the size of the opposition to more atomic explosions for war and because it sounds more defensive than a method of attack. ‘ Books by listed CIA agents recommended reading at UBC BY A PARENT As a taxpayer and parent of a university student, I find it reprehensible that books authored by persons listed as CIA agents are_ being recommended in certain courses at UBC. The books do not deal with espionage, or how to maneuver a coup d’etat in a banana republic, but as one would expect, with communism and the Soviet Union. There has been an outcry against the number of books used in our schools which originate in the USA. From my reading of some of the books, the outcry should be stepped up a thousand fold. It is no secret that the U.S. educational system has for 50 years been geared to the dissemination of anti- communism and anti-Sovietism. To. turn to ‘‘authorities’’ reared in such an atmosphere for an objective and scholarly approach to the USSR makes as much sense as turning to the writings of British politicians during the - reign of George the Third for an objective picture of the American revolution. Yet month after month and year after year students in political science and history courses are subjected to the theories of this type of ‘‘expert”’ on the inner workings of the Soviet system. Year after year a conglomeration of essays written in biased and unscientific terms are recommended to students as source material. Whether this is a deliberate policy on the part of some professors I am not prepared to say. I do say it is impossible for a student to survive four years of this brainwashing without some ‘of the prejudice finding its mark. The fourth-year Arts student in my home recently brought home the book Politics in the Soviet Union, required reading. Anti-war film The fighting anti-war speech of Bess Myerson Grant, linking U.S. aggression in Indochina to America’s economic and social ills is the basis of the powerful anti-war film, ‘“You Don’t Have to Buy War Mrs. Smith” being shown Sunday, Nov. 21 at 600 Campbell Ave., Vancouver. Mrs. Myerson Grant, Commissioner of Consumer Affairs for New York and a former ‘‘Miss America’’, hits hard at the multi-national corporations that profit from U.S. military spending. elie real enemy is Appalachia and the ghettos of Harlem and Watts to be shown ‘_ it’s hunger and despair,”’ she says. ‘‘The enemy is polluted water and air. The film will be shown follow- ing a home-cooked turkey dinner with all the trimmings served at 6 p.m. Later a colorful half-hour Soviet film ‘‘Siberia’’ will be shown. UNDAY — NOVEMBER 21 — 6P. ; 600 CAMPBELL AVE. $2.50 — Pensioners, Students & Children $1.00 Ausp.: Kingsway Club, CPC DINNER Published in the U.S.A., this text includes contributions from seven Soviet Affairs ‘‘experts’’. Two of them, Bernard S. Morris, Indiana University, and Raymond L. Garthoff, John Hopkins, are listed in Who’s Who in the CIA. The last named professor is designated as being an analyst of Soviet-Politico- Military Affairs for the Air Intelligence Service from 1957 to 1961. When he moved into the “education” field is not revealed. Another contributor to this particular book is Professor Robert V. Daniels, who also wrote a diatribe titled The Nature of Communism, also on UBC bookshelves for the edification of students. Daniels does a vicious job of distorting the theories of Marx and Lenin in this book, which, incidently, is published by Frederick Amos Praeger, another former CIA agent who today apparently derives his income from the publication of anti-communist and anti-Soviet books. Daniels recommends dozens of books for his readers which, he says, are the most significant literature in English representing the various perspectives developed in his own book. Among them are no modern Socialist writers, much less Marx or Lenin, but men such as Max Eastman, William Henry Chamberlin, Hamilton Fish Armstrong, Adam Ulam, Bertram Wolfe and other professional Soviet baiters. Chapter One of Daniel’s book begins with the sentence: Communism is grounded in illusion. He carries on in that vein for 375 pages to conclude with a sentence that expounds this gem: ‘“‘Communism, with its _despotic controls and its history of terror — is barbaric in comparison with western society’. (This from a teacher entrenched in a society which produces My Lai’s, Attica’s, Kent State, Black Panther murders and Black lynchings, corruption; rape, and terror in the streets! ) There are many students who recognize this type of propaganda is made available to them for the same reason that big business controls the Board of Governors of the universities, and that endowments produced from the sale of arms for use in Vietnam are acceptable to ‘university authorities. On the other hand it is regrettable that so many taxpaying adults do not become more concerned with the type of propaganda being handed out to young Canadians. I am not so unrealistic as to expect textbooks eulogizing communism, socialism, or the USSR will be used in capitalist Canada’s schools. I do expect, and insist, that objective, scientific, and balanced books on the subjects be given as much use as is the viciously prejudiced guff put out by professors and publishing houses in the pay of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
