But Veniez fears Emerson could be in a position to keep such a recommenda- tion from being endorsed by the B.C. Progress Board. “That would not be in David Emer- son’s interest as CEO of Canfor,” Veniez . said. “How can he separate his role as CEO of Canfor and head of board on matters like that? how he can.” Veniez said Canfor used [ts position as the dominant forest sector player in north- em B.C. to play hardball and keep Skee- 300,000 cubic metres of chips for use in the Prince Rupert pulp mill. Veniez says that sale was torpedoed when Canfor told Slocan it must ‘sell Canfor all of its chips for 15 years or else Canfor wouldn’t by any. He said it’s lucky the premier didn’t take Emerson’s advice to simply shut Skeena Cellulose. down. a a Veniez also raised the progress board the progress issue in a letter he sent to. northwest I don’t see MLAs and mayors in June. “How can the people and business — community of our region have confidence in & process when its head has been at the core of a movement to permanently na Cellulose from getting pulp chips. cut off the northwest’s economic He said Slocan was going to sell SCI lifeline?” he asked in that letter. Skeena officials meet with other unions ahead of IWA A WAR of wards between Skeena Cellulose CEO Dan Veniez and the head of the IWA intensified last week. And SCI’s new boss said he so far has no plans to negotiate directly with the union that represents mill workers in Terrace. Talks took place last week belween new SCI president John Lukosevi- cius and Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada (PPWC) local 4 in Prince Rupert. He also met with the Communications, En- ergy and Paperworkers in Carnaby. “I think what he’s trying to do is get a deal with the PPWC before he comes and meets with us,” said IWA Canada local 2171 president Darrel Wong. Wong says SCI officials haven't approached the union to talk, Meanwhile, Veniez says Wong has never called him, “The .TWA under Mr. Wong's direc- tion has not demonstrated any capacity whatsoever to think outside of the box on what we need to rebuild Skeena,” he said. Veniez also attacked Wong for saying the new owners are engaging in “economic blackmail”. “Sitting in Courtenay collecting a nice salary, telling people they have to go on welfare or relocate and move their families — I: find it abhorrent,” Ve- niez said. “Let these people get back to work.” “The real economic ter- rorism here is not allowing people to go back to work,” he said. Veniez said the need for less expensive con- tracts is a reality. He says he can get $100 million in investment _ to start up and modernize the operations, but adds it depends on new contracts. “No investor in their. right mind is going to put any money of any kind ~ into the place until we have labour agreements in place,” he said. Time is of the essence, he said. “Road building season is fast coming to an .. end,” Veniez said. “We've ~ probably lost 50 per cent of it now.” “Unless we’re able to | refibre the mills, we won’t be able to get back to work until spring anyway.” Veniez said the compa- ny will “wait for as long as it takes” if necessary. “These people will lose their recall rights and then they won't have anything.” Home ransacked on Loen Ave. TERRACE Crimestoppers is asking for the public’s help in trying to find the culprits responsible for breaking into a local home - leaving behind a mess of broken property including electronics.
