VICTOR THE RIGHT-ist EDUCATION: While in Blaine a few days ago at the annual celebrations at the International Peace Arch, our own Education Minister from Victoria, Mr, Peterson, told an audience of many thousands that Canadians should stop plucking feathers from the great Ameri- can eagle, The Americans even now are fighting our battles in such places as Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, and all this for liberty and self-determination for Cana- dians generally. This type of talk while stand- ing under the International Peace Arch, is ironic, It must have caused many to wonder about liberty and self- determination for the Vietnamese and Domini- cans, The only person the aver- age North American ever saw or heard of from Vietnam is that hussie whose husband once held the reins of government until he was neatly assassinated by the very people he puppeteered for, Never has a Vietnam ship or plane been within hailing distance of these shores, it hardly seems they posed much of a threat to Canadian liberty and self-de- termination, All things consider- ed it seems an odd manner the Education Minister has of edu- cating young. people, It cannot be said the speech was not educating, for no onecan now doubt the man is a true’ Socred, Mr. Peterson also said we should have free trade with. the Yanks, He must have for- gotten how the Socreds gave the Columbia away, and it looks like the Americans are now fighting our battles in return for that gift. He sounds like the original absent-minded professor?’ * * * PONDERING THE PAYMENTS; Nanaimo’s Gordon Street park- ing development which was built by taxes, for the benefit of down- town merchants, is now a bit of a headache to city council. They can’t devise a System for further gouging of taxpayers’ money in order to charge for time parked, A half million dollars is a lot of money to spend for the benefit of merchants who didn’t have the good sense to have the city add a restroom on the parking lot for public benefit. Nanaimo is probably the only city of comparable size in this Dominion without a public reste room, it’s ludicrous, Of course one city can’t have everything, Nanaimo can boast of 12 mem-= bers of the Christian Action Movement, and all are men in prominent positions, AMBIGUOUS ANTHOLOGY; At the opening of the new Central Island Health Unit in Port Al- berni, Eric Martin, the Minister of Health, made the understate- ‘ment of the year (for his de- partment, that is) when he strayed from his prepared speech to state if he lived in the shadow of a pulp mill, as in Port Alberni, he would say there was a health hazard, He further said his colleague, Mr, Kiernan, would make astate- ment concerning tests of pulp mill contamination “in due time.” The Socred dictionary edited by Flying Phil can have few pages left for all the big wigs aretear- ing out pages to use in prepared statements, It must be rather annoying to the little man who is so adept at Socred hackneyed phrases. No one likes to have someone steal their thunder: even if he is a political bed-fellow. AS RUMOR HAS IT: There is more laughter at the engineers of Nanaimo’s Heated Swimming ‘Pool than the kids are liable to create in fun. It seems the pool has had to be dug up three times since the cement set, Seems they had to add equipment that should have been incorporated before pouring the concrete, Looks like there could be an investigation for the project was built from public subscription with Federal aid under Winter Works Program, He who laughs last laughs best, ’tis said: so the -kids might have a bit of fun there “yet, Jubilee summer camp season opens July 5 The Children’s Jubilee Sum- mer Association has announced the sessions for summer camp during July and August.
