THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM 0 lJ N REPORT APR 17 1878 TOs Mayor and Council April 17th, 1978 FROM: L. Melnechenko, P. Eng., €.t. L.D. Pollock, Assistant City Engineer City Administrator Re: Proposed Coquitlam River Bridge At the request of Council on April 3rd, 1978, the Engineering Department has completed an investigation and costing of a complete pedestrian footbridge on the Patricia Avenue alignment. Three alternatives are summarized below, but I would caution that at this stage they are not all comparable. ; The first estimate by Lougheed Machine & Welding Co. is for a double steel truss bridge, 150 feet long and 5'~1" wide. This estimate is not comparable with the estimates which follow because the bridge footings have not been designed by a registered Professional Engineer. The proprietor of Lougheed Machine & Welding, Mr. Turner, claims he has allowed for the cost of footings in his total price but I feel that his price cannot be accepted as comparable until some engineering work and costing has been done on the footings. The second and third estimates are for girder bridges 150 feet long, with walkway widths of 5'-0" for a steel girder bridge and 10'-0" for a concrete girder bridge, and these pro- posals are more directly comparable in that aLl aspects of the bridge design, construction and erection have been allowed for in the costs shown. Maintenance in the form of sandblasting and painting will be required to a greater degree with the steel truss bridge and to a lesser degree with the steel girder bridge. The concrete girder bridge will be virtually maintenance free. The steel truss bridge and the concrete girder bridge will have a horizontal walking surface while the steel girder bridge will have a curved walking surface requiring a few steps at each end. The other proposals submitted, which are not summarized here, are all for a substantially greater cost. The walkway costs shown are based on a crushed limestone surface about five feet wide with all work beimg done by City forces. [rceue
