Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 2, 1999 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Sport fishing is sickening Dear Sir: lam Nisga’a and damn proud of it. We are very strong traditionally, culturally, morally and have strong values and ethics, Maybe the bifocals should come off, so, people can see really what is going on around them, It’s so easy to put other peoples tra- ditions down, bui what about your own traditions? Whaling and fishing are traditions that were passed down for generations. As a Nisga’a, let’s talk fishing. We have very strong traditions on fishing. Fish are respected. Visit the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Park. Listen to the oral history with regards to cruelty and disrespect to salmon and ali animals. Salmon were welcomed as chiefs, they were welcomed into the valley, the rivers, creeks, streams. They were given a ceremony — the First Salmon Ceremony. Chiefs and matriarchs welcomed the salmon scattered swan’s down and spoke with great eloquence and Tespect so as not to upset the balance of the run. Cruelty and sport were not traditional. Sport fishing seems to be waditional to non-natives. Playing with salmon to the brink of death, then Iet them go. Sandecki thing so Dear Sir: Re: Claudette Sandecki’s mug? These mugs are being sold “Some sport, huh???’ How much Strength and conscience does this take? Later the poor salmon drifts back to sea exhausted, then dies anyway along with some 30,000 eggs. It’s sickening.” : Our history diciates thal when this happens all the salmon will move from their home and no longer go there, , Take a good look at where fishing is loday. We can sec the truth, Can any- body else? Fishing commercially and for sport has gone from months to weeks to days and now to hours, Next there will be no fishing at ail. At least we have strong traditions to teach us this. We have strong tradi- lions because we have strong roots. Roots planted in our soil and in our . minds. We are not blown where even the winds take us. These traditions benefit this town a lot. Again we are used for the money ovr culture brings here. © Then we are abused. - Take for instance the letter in Wed- nesday’s Mailbag. Rock throwing, name calling. Consider who should go back where they came from, We welcomed all visitors. Visitors who never left. An open heart has al- ways been traditional, We are proud of thal. How much conscience does it take to wish death on a fellow human. Is that humane? Sapreone needs to ¢x- amine their valves, when thoughts of wishing death to another, Even after all our people have been forced to do, we would never wish death on some- one. What about the powers of oolicahn? This has been the survival of our people for generations before all the piseeses of the Europeans. All first nations have great respect for the balance of nature, Our chiefs governed the land. They knew exactly how many animals were in their governing area. This was the same for salmon. Now with the devastation of logging the beauty of the greenness thal was once there, it has turned to the greediness of green money. You will never see a native person trophy bunting. Think about that. As for whale watching. It’s just an- other form of harassment to a creature who doesn’t have a choice, Again the greenery of the almishty dollar. Dennis Nyce Gitwinksilhkw, B.C. ’s article is garbage simple as a coffee have never people with asthma wha coniplained about the weight of their have donated your cash and let someone else enjoy the mug that you hate so much, May 12, 1999 Column "Weightlifter Physique Needed" In regards to your column on Avon’s "Flame of Hope" coffee mug. What has this world come to when some- one can totally trash some- to raise money for breast cancer research, something which unfortunately has hit way too many women and their families in this world. To call a coffee mug a health hazard — I know coffee mug — is ridiculous! To compare it te Andre the Giant you must be desperate for a column, If you were going to total- ly disregard your donation for a coffee mug you should In the future I hope you find something more impor- lant to write about than waste our newspapers space on garbage like this article. Lianne Funk Terrace, B.C, School board © * fied Dear Sir: We have been lied tol. During the public question period at the school board meeting of May Sih we were fold that the board could not close down a school. I’m sure that the parents of the school in Meziadin are relieved to hear that the announced closure of their school can’t happen, It has also been said that there is no room at Clarence Michiel or ET Kenney ta accommodate students en- rolled at Parkside, Currently there are three empty classrooms at ET Kenney and if the Native Education centre were to be moved into the District Resource Centre, there would be four empty class- rooms at Clarence Michiel, more than adequate room, . The only reason that this board will not look into closing Parkside is that this is an election year. To those few parents wha are short-sighted enough to | still want Parkside kept open at the expense of the band program, I hope you have the money for private music lessons because by the time your kids are in grade six, that’s the only way they'll receive music, [ urge all parents to enroll their kids at either Clarence Michiel or ET Kenney and force the board to explain why they want to keep an empty school open. Stephen Lome Radford, 40, of Terrace is serving 90-day jail sentence for threatening to kill or hurt a local woman on Sep, 6, 1998. ; Radford serves a second concurrent 90-day sentence for harassing the same womari in the three months leading to the Sep. 6 inci- dent to..the point that. she feared for her safcty. A third 7-day sentence for driving with a prohibited licence was tacked onto his i sentence, All time will be served via an electronic monitor while Radford finishes his me- chanics training at North- west Community College. The harassed woman, who can not be identified, de- scribed Radford as okay when sober. If drunk, how- ever, Radford was said to be extremely frightening. Judge Paul Lawrence also ordered Radford to stay away from and not contact the woman he issued threals against Radford will also need to undergo alcohol counselling at the discretion of his probation officer and give up any firearms, explosives or ammunition in his pos- session. Prosecutor Brad Tomlin gaid that while the sentence could appear relatively light to some, Radford’s record of convictions — including a robbery with viclemce and impaired driving charges — do not include that many as- saulls, , And, he said, if Radford doesn’t comply with any of the terms, he will serve the test of his time in custody. Atid Mary Jane Burr at the Terrace probation office said it’s not unusual for of- fenders on an electronic monitor to leave the home for work, school or counselling.
